The Bureau‘s figures cover births, deaths and marriages registered in sixtyâ€"seven towns ONTARIO IS IN ONE But while the fatality of pneuâ€" monia has been reduced, the probâ€" lem of its prevention still remains. And in some areas the struggle with this disease appears to be more severe than in others, for there are certain regions which have be come known as the "pmneumonia belts." A study published a few years ago by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company indicated that there are on this continent two clearâ€"cut preumonia belts. One is in the east, beginning with the Canâ€" adian province of Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and along the Atâ€" lantic coast all but four states have aboveaverage pneumonia death rates. The second pmeumonia belt consists of the four states in the mountain region, viz.,. Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. PRAIRIES ARE SAFER A point that will surprise most people is that neither latitude nor a cold climate have any relation to the prneumonia rate. The provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta and South Dakota aro safer, from pneumonia, thar are South Carolina, Georgia and Arizora, which have warmer climates. It appears that the comâ€" bination of a cold climate and low average humidity, as is found in Alberta, Saskatchewan and a numâ€" ber of American states, cperates in favor of a low pneumonia inci dence. Drop in Marriages; Births, Deaths Up Until the discovery and general use of sulphanilamide and its deâ€" rivatives, pneumonia was known as the fourth largest killer of the popâ€" ulation of this continent, says the Toronto Daily Star. About 20,000 Canadians aunually became ill with pneumonia, and one out of four usually died of it. With the aid of the new antiâ€"pneumonia drug nine out of ten lives can now be saved. A person who is stricken with pneuâ€" monia has practically from 75 to 80 per cent better chances of reâ€" covery than formerly, and the morâ€" tality rates from pnoumonia were last year reduced by twoâ€"thirds in the hospitals. North America‘s Pneumonia Belts "Clothes have been altered too," he said. Discussing changes that bad come about since he entered the Far North, Father Bazin said: "Traffic moves terribly fast now. When 1 was in Winnipes last week I walked about but was afraid to cross the street; the automobiles move so fast. Their shapes have changed since I last saw them." CHANGES SEEN IN CIVILIZATION His mission, which is at Igloolik, 1,000 miles north of Churchill, serves 350 Eskimos spread over an area of almost 400 miles. Although he has not "been out" gince 1929, Father Bazin is anxiâ€" ous to return. He is not "greatly attracted to civilization. I hope to be ablo to start back to the Arctic by next July," he said. Although the Eskimos now realâ€" ize that there is a war going on they still think it is strange. He said that anger to an Eskimo is a grave crime. ANGER IS A CRIME He said that the Eskimos could not imagine people becoming angry enough to fight and the only way in which the situation could be exâ€" plained was to tell them that the war came about because "one peoâ€" ple tried to steal another‘s proâ€" perty. I told them that one peoâ€" pleâ€"Germanyâ€"tried to steal Poâ€" land and that Britain and France tried to step the theit and had to fight Germany." en Bazin, 37â€"yearâ€"old Oblate missâ€" ionrary. Father Bazin who has spont the last 11 years in the Far North without visiting civilization is at present in Montreal undergoing medical treatment. To The Eskimo Eskimos far up in the Arctic on the Melville Peninsula have been having a pretty hard time trying to understand the present war in Europe, according to Father Stephâ€" Missionary Returned From Far North. After Eleven Years Tells of Native Views how easy it is to protect beauty from winter blasts.
