Terent reum & WA® lite nust with they Cly@ Lls He rst 1d Faith is the disposition of the mind, by which we hold for certain the matter afâ€" firmed. As thus expressed in general terms, faith may be viewed under two aspectsâ€"fundimental to the intellectuality and activity of man; the other as instruâ€" mental to the salvation of man, and to his attainments in the knowledge and practice of spiritual t.ings. The distussion of the former in regard to man as an. intellectuah und active being is worthy of careful inâ€" vestigation, and such investigation would be as interesting as instructive, and conâ€" tributive to mental science ; but we are at present concerned, not so much with the peychological as with the thelogical character of faith. We, therefore, just now confine ourselves to what is called saving faith. In this sense, faith holds a most prominent place in the economy of grece. Let us note a fow of its salient points. 1. The nature of faith as instrumental in our salvation. _ In the light of seripture, saving faith stards out to view with the vlearness and brightress of a sunbeam ; but from various causes, a great mist bas been so east around it that inadequate noâ€" tions prevail among men concerning it. One cause is the ignorant prattle of some men, which is enough to afflict us with mental paralysis, instead of imparting to our mind a healthy tone and clear conâ€" «eptions in regard to the prineiples of religion. Another is the pet views of men, rept corrupt by some a be more it it faith, for truth that that I am that there to the sor in is deéear oon. Oh when l am brought to this, when I let go self, and all that tends to advance self, and let me down on the grace of God, then I am brought into personal and immediate coutact not only with the fulness that is in Christ, but with Christ Josus Himsel{. â€" Now, it is often at this very point that souls stagger, that souls stumble, that souls halt, that souls hoesitate; yea, dear friends, it is often at this very point that souls perishâ€"we are so unwilling to renounce everything of self, so unwilling to come as poor dependant sinners, knocking at Christ‘t door seeking an answer from Christ in His own holy way. 5 Mr. Caven, Collector of Inland Revenue, Godench, and officer Craig, Walkerton, seizâ€" ed a distilling and malting establishment in Culross township. The concern was not in operation at the time of the seizure, but evidences were not wanting of a large illicit traffic having been very recently carmed on. The Walkerton Telescope says:â€"Of all the Cansdian industries that are said to suffer for want of protection salt is most frequently mentioned in this district, Now what would a tariff of say 10c a barrel mean. It would mean $40 a day to Mr. Rishtmeyer and a proportionate sum to other salt men, without enabling them to sell a single barrel more than they do now. The fact is that the salt imported in Ontario is & mere trifle, being only 33,751 bushels from the United States, valued at $6,400; just about what Mr. Rightmeyer produces in one meonth. On the other hand, we ship to the United States, in spite of the high turiff there, no less than 785,793 bushels, worth $81,443. In this amount is not included what we export to the United States not our own production. 1t will thus be seen that, even should the tariff on imported salt be raised, it would not likely prevent w single bushel from coming in, but it would tax the people for the benefit of a few salt men. 81 aud popular monthly magazines for young people we know of, and makes a particularly handsomeo and desirable present. | Tho}number now before us contains nearly 100 pages, and is filled with strik« ing and beautiful pictures. .
