J } ti! iL 4 Wt A [ The first thing to be learned by a boy or cung man, or any one else having the east ambition to become a useful member of society, is the habit of saving. No matter if a boy or girl has wealthy parents, each should learn to save, if for no other reason thaw that riches are well known to "take to themselves wings and fly away." Few re so wellâ€"toâ€"do as to be secure against poverty and want. In this country it is notorously true that the children of the wealthy classes are often miserably poor ; while the men of large means among us commenced life without other advantages than habits of industry coupled with the disposition to save. A native and highlyâ€"intolligent Chinaâ€" man, writing letters from the Celostial Empiro to the California journals, is givâ€" izq no | ttle frosh information and correct ing a number of ervoncous opinions about that country. Its population, instead of being 450,000,000 to 500,000,000, as generâ€" ally, reported,is not more than 100,000,008 to 120,000,000. Tt has reached the limit of asvieultural develooment.and the people It is especially important that the chilâ€" dren of people ir moderate cireumstances and of the poor should learn to take care of the money they get. A boy who is earning fifty cents, seventyâ€"five cents, or a dollar a day, should manage to save a portion of it if possible. If he can lay by only twentyâ€" five cents a week, let him save that. lt doesn‘t amount to much, it is true ; it is only thirteen dollars a year, but it is worth saving ; it is better saved than wasted ; better saved than fooled away for tobacco or beer, or any otker worthless or useless article cr object. But the best thing about it is that the boy who saves thirteen dollars a year on a very meagre salary acquires a habit of taking eare of his money which will be of the utmost value to him. The reason why working men as & class do not get ahead fasterâ€"are not more inâ€" dependentâ€"is that they have never learnâ€" ed to save their earnings. It does not matter a great deal whether a man receives a salary of a dollar a day or five dollars. if he gets rid of it all during the week,so that there is nothing left Saturday night, he will not get rich very rapidly. He will of the equal burning or the earbon pcints. This system bolongs to the Societo Generale dDlestricite, who are at law in London with Wells & Co., whom they charge with infringing, not the Jablochkoff system, as is generally supposed, but an electric generator, which is the property of the society, and which they say is at present the most powerfal for the purpose yet disâ€" never havs much ahead. But the indiâ€" vidual who.receives one dollar per day,and is able to savoe twenty cents, or the one getting five dollars who is careful to lay by a dollar, is laying up something for a rainy Young people who expect to labor with their hands for what they may have of this world‘s goods, who have no ambition or wish to become professional men, officeâ€" holders or speculators, should by all means acquire habits of economy, learn to save. So surely as they do this, so surely will they be able to accummlate, so surely will they be in a situation to ask no special favora. Every man wants to learn to look ont for himsel{ and rely upon himself. Every man needs to feel that he is the peer of every ether man, and he cannot do it f he is penmiless, Money is power, and those who have it exert a wider influence than the destitute. They are more indeperdent. pira is in the hands of a few, and there is wo darger, with a diminishing population and incroasing wages at home, of a great immigration to the Unitedl Stites as is feared on the Pacific slope. But the Celesâ€" tial says frankly that his people are not fairly dealt with there, and that, if they are much worse treated than they have been, China may provide hersei{ with modâ€" ern instruments of war, and punish the U. States as he thinks they deserve. congenial employment. . The labor of classification will occapy at least ten years, and has even nowv begun. Since l necession to the Pontificate, Leo. has "y.nsacked" all the disused chambers of tho Papel palace, and has himself formulatâ€" ed a plan for the thorough arrangement of the literary and artistio treasures in his wat editor assured us t patent would be re machine which, co be fixed in each ho a shilling a mont‘ Learning to Save. Alexanâ€" dor hobertson, Librarian, On the 12th ult. a vote was taken to reâ€" peal the township Dunkin byâ€"law in the front of Leeds and Lansdowne. At the close of the poll the vote stood : For reâ€" peal, 16 ; against, 217â€"thus giving a maâ€" jority for Dunkin of 201 good, solid votes. The byâ€"law fir the repeal of the Dunkin Act will be submitted to the ratepayers of Peterboro‘ (town) for their vores on the 9th or December. The Licensed Victuallers of York, Ont., are about to seek the repeal of the Dunkin Act in that county. The friends of the Act expect to contest successfully the repeal movement. The Canada Temperance Act is being energetically taken hold of in New Brunswick. York and Albert have comâ€" pleted their petitions, and the same will soon be said of Charlotte,Carleton, Victoria and Kings. It is stated as afact that the City of Lewiston, Maine, with a population of 18,â€" 000 has not had an arrest for drunkenness in twenty years. P., characterised the temperance movement as the greatest social movement of the day. Night of meeting, Thursiay on or before ull moon in cach month, T. Jones, Sec. speaking of the increase of druukenness amongst the higher celasses, and amongst ladies, he thought no one who read the Bravo case could doubt that there was a close association between the habits of the wife and the death of the husband, with reâ€" gard to whose death no doubt a different conclusion would have been arrived at if the fact recently brought to light had been obtained at the inquest. As to legislative action, he thought they would be wise if they considered what would be the miniâ€" mum of legislation they would agree to,and then press that forward. Deprecating the intemperate language often used by the temperance advocates, he urged conciliation by moderation of their expressions ; and, R A curious ancient Mexican library has been found in the ruins of a vast palaco at Xayi, near Chiapas, in Southern Mexico. The writings are inscribed on torraâ€"cotta lablets, half an inch thick, and are supposed to be saered records, but the language in which they aro written is not accurately known. DURHAM DIRECTORY having suggested the substitution of money payments in lieu of beer given to domestic seryints, he pointed to cocora and coffee taverns as a means of greatly helping the temperance cause. The article is telling its own story in the hands of thousands who are using it with most gratifyâ€" Ing and encouraging results: Mr. GestayuUs P. HaLt, of the Oates Opera Troupe writes: "After six weeks‘ use am conâ€" vinced, as ar» also my comrades, that your CAR« CARBOLINE ©:: CARBOLINE :. CARBOLINE :s3 CARBOLINE is‘ CARBOLINE ¢z* CARBOLINE Sss sokasesiccn h Is now presented to the Irnblle withont frar of contradiction as the best Kestorative and Beautl~ fer of the Hair the world has ever produced. The greatest discovery of our day, so far as & large portion of humanity is concerned, is CARâ€" BOLIN®, an article prepared from Petroleum, and which effects a complete and radical cure in case of baldness, or where the hair, owing to diseases of the sealp, has become thin and tends to fall out. 1t is also a speedy restorative, and, while its use secures a luxuriant growth of hair, It also brings back the natural color, and gives the most comâ€" plete sitisfaction in the using. The falling out of the hair, the accumulations of dandruff, and the premature change in color, are all evidences of a «diseased condition of the scalp and the glands which nourish the bair, To arrest these causes the article used must possess medical as well a# chemical virtues, and the change must begin under the scalp to be of permanent and lasting benefit. Buch an article Is CARBOLINE, and like many other wonderful discoverles it is found to consist of elements almost in their natural state, Petro« lewm oll is the article which is made to work such extraordinary results; but it is after it has been chemically treated and completely deodorized that It is in proper condition for the tollet. It was in farâ€"off Russia that the effect of petroleum upon the hair was first observed, a Government officer hayâ€" ing noticed that a partially baldâ€"headed servant of his, when trimming the lamps, had a habit of wiping his oflâ€"besmeared hands in his scanty locks, and the result was in a few months a much finer head of black, glossy hair than he ever had before. The oll was tried on horses and cattle that had lost the.r hair from the cattle plague, and the results were as rapid as they were marvelous, The manes and even the tails of horses, which had falâ€" len out, were completely restored in a few weeks, These experiments were heralded to the world, but the knowledge was practically useless to the prematurely bald and gray, as no one in civilized society could tolerate the use of refined petroleun as a dressing for the hair. But the skill of one of our own chemists has overcome the dificulty, and, by a process known only to himself, he has, after very elaborate and costly experiments, succeeded in deodorizing petroleum, which renders 1t susâ€" ceptible of being handled as daintily as the fumous #ax do cologne, ‘The experiments made with the deodorized liquid on the human hair were atâ€" tended with the most astonishing results. A few applications where the hair was thin and falling gave remarkable tone and vigor to the scalp and hair. Every particle of dandruff disappears on the first or second dressing, and the liquid, so searching in its nature, seems to penetrate to the roots at once and set up a radical change from the start. It is well known that the most beautiful colors are made from petroleutn, and by some mysâ€" terlous operation of nature the use of this article gradually imparts a beautiful lightâ€"brown color to the hatr, which, by continued use, deepens to a black, The coler remains permanent for an in» definite length of time, and the change is so gradâ€" wal that the most intimate friends can searcely detect its progress. In a word, it is the most wonâ€" derfal discovery of the age, and well calculated to make the prematurely bald and gray reJolce. vinced, as are also my comrades, that &nur Care BoriNE has and iurrwluvlvm a wonderful growth of hair where 1 had none for years." N. MCCLARRAN, Sixth Avenue Pharmacy, Pittsburg, Pa., says: "The fioo«l effects from the use of CARBOLINE are brought to my notice every day to such an extent as to jumr( me in recom» mending it to my most intimate friends."
