Bessemere steel is made by blowing air through melted cast iron, thus burning siâ€" licon and carbon out of the east iron. After the silieon and cabou ors burned out, melted spiegeleisan or ferroâ€"magenese is ad. ded to the charge, The carbou in the spieâ€" gel reâ€"carbonizes the steel to theâ€"desired point, and the maganese unites with and reâ€" moves the oxygen which the air used leaves in the steel. Openâ€"hearth steel is made by melting, in a very bot furnace, a charge of pig iron. To this welted ijron, which is galled the "bath," is added either wrought iron, serap steel, or iron ore, and the whole is kept hot until melted. The wrought iron, serap,or ore, reduces the carâ€" bou or silicon in the bath to such proporâ€" tions as are desired in the steel. Resseme: and openâ€"hearth steel are muoch alike in quslity. They are used mainly for rails; boiler plates, ship plates, bidges and other structural purposes and machinery. The better qualities are also used largely for by melting blister steel and tempered to suit by mixing iron of the same garde in the crucible, is always better than German or blister steel made from the same blisâ€" hammering it thoroughly. Double shear steal is made by cutting up shear steel, piling it, heating it, then hammering again. The best shear steel is made out of the best wrcught iron. The shear steels are very useful on account of their toughnes« and the ease with which they can be weldâ€" ed to irop, and, when of good quality and well worked, they will hold a very fine edge. Cruicible steel is Made by melting in a eruicible either blister steel, or blister eteel and wrought iron, or wrought iron and charcoal, or wrought iron and serap steel,or in short,a great variety of mixtures, which depend on the quality of steel to be produced. â€"Crucible steel can be appliâ€" ed to any purpose for which steel is used. Gemerally it is better than any other kind of steelâ€"that is to say, erucible steel made ‘ Originally, the word steel was applied ouly to iron which contains such quantities of caushon as would cause hardening when the redhot iron was cooled suddenly. This term still applies, but, in addition, the term cast steel applies to all the products of the eruicible, the Bessemer converter, and the open hearth furnace, whether such products are too low in earbon to harden or not. The steels that are not called cast steeil are known in the market as blister steel, (icrman steel, shearsteai, and double shear steel. Blister steal is made by heatâ€" ing bars oi wrought iron, bedded¢ in charâ€" coal, in bermetically sealed chambers, The earbon of the charcoul penstrates the hot tron, converting it into & erystaline mass of erude steel ; large blisters rise on the surface of the bars, giving the name blister steel to the product. German steel is blisâ€" i ter steel rolled down into bars. It is used mainly for tires and common springs, but is rapidly being susperseded by the cheaper grades of cast steol. Bhear steel is made by taking a high hoat on blister steel and | the table furnished by Mra. Melntyre the wife of the Deputy Reeve. The selection of the village of McTutyre as the place in which to hold the annual fair reflects sreat credit on the officers and directors of the Society not only foraccomâ€" modation in Mr. McLean‘s new hall, ample that to cusual observers the difficulty in judging was clearly apparent. But after mature deliberation, the first prize was the chief ethibitors and showed very fine double and single buggies, and of course earried off the first prize as usual. The show of horses was superior to any ever exhibited in this section of the coun try being far abead of the county fair in this respect, and would do credit to a Proâ€" vineial or Dominion Exbhilition. The fine art department was hbardly up to the mark although some fine specimeas fine, the pumpkins and squashes especiaily attracting attention, while the exhilits of potatoes also merited attention.
