Stock of Manager Ritoinicintcattsiecsatdh ts 2 ’ Exâ€"Empress of France at Chiselhurst; yet Sir Leonard Tilley told us that the mon opolists would spend their money in this country for the benefit of our poor and lnâ€" boring classes. If elected I will gladly enrol myself as a follower of that distinguished scholar Ild} able statesman, the Hon. Edward Blake ; a geutleman of spotless character and exâ€", Exâ€" Mr. Redpath, a sugar refiner in Moqtrnl, has realized such enormous profits out of the taxâ€"payers of this country as enables him to spend millions abroadl in the purâ€" chase of the gnndpnhthlnn’dmolfln‘ ~/90, â€" Femnine & _0 I shall vigorously oppose the building up of monopolies out of the public revenus and will combat to the utmost of my power any system that makes any man, or any class of men, rick by impoverishing all other classes. As a refult of protectior. in Canâ€". ada for three years, we find it stated tlml o ow s C tling and improving the same. I am per. suaded that a liberal policy, such as this, is better calculated to develop the material prosperity of that vast territory than the present policy of handing it over to foreign landlords and Railroad Syndicates. _ I am in favor of giving rasE oraxts of our wide domain in the Northwest to actual settlers, so that the sons of the proneers of this country may find free homes provided I for them in that district on condition of setâ€" #15 %45 p.m by T 435 p.m. With this brief sketch of the record of the Dominion government for the past four years, permit me to call your attention to the claims upon which I ask your support. I shail, if elected favor that system which gives equal rights to every class , equal and just taxation to every class; the maintenâ€" ance of Provincial rights, honesty, economy and efficiency in our administration of pub= lic affuirs; the greatest good to the greatest number, ® The boasting of the Government over the suceess of their policy lias become proverâ€" bial, yet as the hour of their trial appronches their conduct belies their professions. They do not appeal to the people for a free and untrammeled expression of opinion at the polls, with the same electoral divisions as the Hon. Alex. Mackenzie appoaled to in , 1879, but have resorted to a trick to deâ€" prive a majority of the electors of Ontario |of'uw franchise. This has been done by carving up the Ridings and arranging them so that a minority of the electors may eleat a majority of the members. By such means the government hopes to secure the election of men who will keep them in power in deâ€" fiance of the sovereign will of the people, and of British "fair play." In order to acâ€" complish this object, filty Ridings have been changed and twentyâ€"five Counties emasculated in Ontario alone. They also created six new contituencies and gave Ontario four more members while many people think we have already too many. name moreâ€"McDonald & Charlebois, of { Montreal, emminent contractors, tendered for the Port Moody section of the Pacific ’Railwuy. Their tender was $209,225 less than Mr. Onderdonk, "a Yankee contracâ€" tor," yet Mr. Onderdonk, whose tender was $200,225 more than the Canadianfirm received the contract. This is, I suppose, what the Government calls, "Canada for the Canadians," If I mistake not, the people of Canada will call it by another name, The systeimm of letting contracts under the presont Government is sufficient of itâ€" self to alienate the support of candid men, by whatever name they may be known politically, Take one instanceâ€"I might est of the speculator and against the actual settler; for while the former can purchase land at one dollar per acre, the actual setâ€" tler is compelled to pay from $2 to $2.50 an acre for the same quality of land. From the Bureau of Statistics we learn that in the year ending 30th of June, 1881, 120,â€" 000 of our people left C.:nada to find homes in the United States. ‘ many respects to that which has disturbed the peace, marred the happiness and blightâ€" ed the prosperity of Ireland for many genâ€" erations past. The policy of the Governâ€" ment in dealing with the lands in the North West appears to be conceived in the interâ€" The failure of the Government to ratify the boundary award has for the present despoiled Ontario, of 97,000 square miles of valuable territory, north west of Prince Arthur‘s Landing, a territory rich in minâ€" erals, mines and timber. â€" The timber alone is estimated to be worth $125,000,000 and is capable of yielding sufficient revenue to govern this Province for many years to | come. > The contract made with the Pacific Railway Syndicate establishes in the Northâ€" west a monopoly, which has no paraliel on the continent of America. By this conâ€" tract, a systom is inaugurated similar in| I exceedingly regret that our annual ex: penditure has assumed such an alarming and rapid rate of increase. During the past session, the Dominion Government | asked Parliament to grant them $28,000,â€" | 000, to carry on the affairs of the country for the coming year. This suam be it underâ€" stood, is nearly $5,000,000, more than the Hon. Mr. MacKenzie required for the same service. If this ruinous rate continâ€" lnes, our taxes which have been doublod, ‘sinco 1878 will be found quite inadequate to provide for a continuance of this extrayâ€" agent outlay. 1 have to inform you that our national debt has increased over $20,â€" 000,000 since the advent of the present party to power. ,!nlt., and am now in the field as a candiâ€" date for the suffrages of the électors of South Grey at the approaching election for the House of Commons. The Dominion Government has not in my opinion adminâ€" istered the affairs of our country in such & manner as entitles them to a renewal of ‘ support, Geititzemey :â€"I desire to intimate that I have accepted the nomination of the reâ€" presentativé convention held in Durham on the 2nd of March and ratified by the repreâ€" sentatives of Artetfcsia assembled in conâ€" vention at Flesherton on the 19th of M;y‘ 1 t n nnnnnennnens mm TCO the EHLOCtELG *4 patrictism ; "Canada‘s 0 Â¥n and ablest SOUTH GREY day at home.
