For some weeks past the church has been andergoing repainting and being made attractive generally. To say that the committee in charge have succeeeded is saying little. Seats, walls and ceiling are of an agreeable shade and evidences of a refined taste are visible in designs, bordering, etc. External and internal adormment in a church may be indicaâ€" tive of a worldly lemg(-nunent on the part of its members, but where adoinâ€" ments are carried out in a manner withâ€" out undue extravagance, it indicates a spirit of love for the House of God which springs from true devotion. The Sabbath Services were well atâ€" | la tended, and Rev. Mr. Gilray‘s sermons | Y« well received. We would like to have | s heard one, but could not make connecâ€" | b tions till Monday night. Lectures are | 0 often voted dull and stupid and are | h "not in it" with soirees, picnics, | 8 etc. but Mr. Gilray‘s lecture was not of | V this type. (It was clearly delivered, f spiced with humor, with enough pathos t introduced to heighten interest by conâ€" | N trast. His word pictures were vivid, and remained on the mind even after | I all the excitement of a night‘s fightâ€" | 1 ing with the fire,. We went to the Sauâ€" | . 5¢>en and were taken to the Tiber. We | rove to the Rocky and found ourselves 1 in Rome. His subject was a trip to | Europe, and beginning at Toronto, ] he took his audience _ across the Atlantic, revelled for a while in London, sketched Paris during the revolution, and told of the notable sights to be found there. Then he plunged his audâ€" |ience under the Alps emerging into ‘| sunny Italy, visiting Turin, Geuoa, and hauling up at Rome. â€" He travelled the | | streets with us, explored the catacombs , | visited the many famous places of anciâ€" ent and modern times, but dwelt longest and lovingly on the Church of St. Peter, , | We thought we discovered his object 1 in this; it might be he thought the pride of the Rockvites in their fine new church Y | needed humbling and no way so effective to do this as by showing them a better, _ | St. Peter‘s may have a dome, but we 3 | bet the Tiber hasno trout to compare â€" | with the Saugeen and neither we believe »â€" | would the Presbyterians up there take e the Pope in exchange for their ]llin.lh“"l' even though he is Little, We haven‘t time to make absentees. sorrier by desâ€" m-ihin}z' Pisa, Florence, etc right good Lecture and we i were tuere. Toronto and its vicinity being much visited by those in outer places, it has appeared that many might appreciate short letters describing not only its atâ€" tractions but also setting forth the topâ€" ies of thonght current, the events which seem to be most conspicuoug and which are being discussed not only in Toronto but in all Ontario, as also the doings of men of the times in Toronto. Coming near the time of the Great Industrial Exhibiton it might be well to notice some of the Y‘l:u'os where the visitor might I(u wit rrufit and pleaâ€" sure.
