And surcely in this struggle the men who fought with Dr. Landerkin through alt the opposition we have out lined will again be found with him ; the opposition was io them as well as to him, and now in the hour of natienal vietory it would seem to be most fitting that the old goaard under the old leader should be together at the finish, should share together in the triumph. We have no intention of belittling opponents or of using campaign cries at the expense of truth. So when we say that trom all parts of the ridiog the outlook is bright for the return of Dr Landerkin we mean it. Conseryâ€" atives anrd Patrons too have been found to admit it, and numbers of both will be found voting for the Liberal Canâ€" This man has been opposed in the past, but of legitimate opposition no one can complain. He has been bitterâ€" ly assailed. â€" Foul means have been tised to defeat him. _ The Government tried it, when it added Artemesia to South Grey ; the attempt failed. False loyalty cries, and partizan franchise Act failed; even the stuffing of the ballot boxes failed though the intention was there; the protest and receunt failed, and we believe all epposition, fair or foul will again fail to deteat Dr. Landerkin, who again presents him self to the electors, able as of yore to fight their battles, clean as of yore to earry their standard. We venture to say NEATHY NVW 10 the 7000 voters in this riding would prefer Lagrier Laugrier is straight forward, indeâ€" pendent, and aboye Coercion by his own churech. _ Tapper is deceittul, (witness the Greenway telegram, ) the servaut of the Hierarchy (see the Bishop‘s mandement, ) the high priest of corruption, and the apostle of coerâ€" cion. didate The two epposing candidates will of course each dao weil in his own localisy Dr. Landerkin will not have a walk over; but we are safe in saying that aiter June 23rd he will again be able to write M. P. to his name, and Patron;, Conservatiye and Liberal will be equalâ€" ly well represented. Does George Landerkin please you ? He has been true to his principles. _ A consistent upholder of provincial rights he has by vote and voice opposed the eotreion of Manitoba. â€" He supports a platform approved not only by a naâ€" t‘oual convention of liberais but by the whole patron party. True he has been in ovposition most of the time, bus he has done all a man could do there. It is sometimes said he has done nothâ€" ing for us. | Has he nct. Let alone his public duties, he has ever been found wiXing to furnish information or take trouble over any local matter brought to his attention. _ He has done more : the testyears of his life have been givâ€" en to the public service. True he has been paid for it, but there can be no deubt, that he would be a wealthier man to day if be had refused the call of his fellowâ€"citizens to be their repreâ€" sentative in the National Council. How many voters in South Grey would preter Tupper to Laurier? â€"Arclibishop Langevin is doing his best to foment a religious war. He has secured the coâ€"operation of . eleven of the Quebec Bishops and these bave issued their gqmu;angll to theLi_r flos}t_s ~sSir Chas. Tupper was in Quebec. Last week he addressed alarge meet ing in Mentreal. _ In common with many orators on his side, he does not adhere to the naked truth. On the Manitoba question he said it was not a question of forcing*Separate Schools on a Proviece, but one of carrying out the judgment otf the Privy Council. Now the Privy Council gave no judgâ€" ment to the effect that So};itrur.c Scehools should be established in anitoba. â€" It simply gave the opinion that a grieyâ€" ance might: exist, and indicated no remedy. Tupper wou‘d lerd the country to suppose that the trade policy of the Liberal Party and of Mr. Laurier‘in particular is Free Trade as it is in England. The policy of the Liberals isâ€"â€"a tariff for revenue only. The interest on our huge nationâ€" «1 debt piled up by conservatives has to be paid and the running expenses of the Government have to be met. These expenditures necessitate a tariff, but a tariff to enable the country to meet its liabilities not a tariff to benefit a few high protectionists." Such is the Liberal trade policy. of this Province are purely nonâ€"denomâ€" inational, yet of the 110,000 Roman Catholie children in Ontario more than one half attend the Public Szshools. It is the same in Manitoba where the Roman Catholic parents prefer sending their children to the Public Schools alâ€" though archbishop Langevin is so inâ€" tent upon drivia@ them into Separate Sehools. And still turther, down by the sea, in Nova Scotia, New Bruns wick and Prince Edward Island, the Roman Catholics have and enjoy exceptional privileges at the hands of the Protestant manjorities in these Provinces. But how is it in the Province ot Quebece where the Rowman Tatholics are largely in the majority. _ In that Province the Public Schools are purely dencminational. â€" Roman Catholiedoe: trines are tiught in them and Roman Catholic books« and Catechisms are used as textbooks. Still further, these schools, conducted in a way s» offensive to Protestants, are supported largely by Protestants, for by the law of the Province threeâ€"fourths of the school taxesâ€"including the taxes of all joint stock companies, banks, corporations business of all kinds and these are chiefly if not wholly owned by Protestâ€" antsâ€"go to the support of the Roman Catholic Public Schools. . On the other hand the Protestant Schools in Quebc, are really the nonâ€"denominational Schools for they are conducted after the manner of the Publis Schools 6t Ontario. â€" Let every reasomable Roman Catholic and every elector who proposes supporting Tupper‘s . remedial legislaâ€" ture look at this picture and that, and let him say in all conscience which side of the questson, as citizens of a free country, they are bound to supâ€" port. _ This is not a Papal kingdom, as a leading Journal has remarked, but a free community, in which all power lies in the hands of the people, of the majority. _ It is therefore a dangerous thing in their own interests whea minâ€" orities attempt anything that is conâ€" trary to the dictates of reason and common m cr subversion of the rights of the"majority. : C For South Grey Grorge Kanberhin.
