McNaulty, Collingwood ; K. Watson, Waters Falls; G. Watson, Georgetown, A %m'den party was held at the Methoâ€" dist Parsonage, Thursday evening, when a large number gathered to bid Rev. Mr, Hartly and family farewell. They will carry the best wishes of their many Priceville friends away with them. A very enjoyable time was spent. The recent rain has put ever ybody in FOOd humor,. although some of them did ose their vote. Misses Emma and Lizzie Robertson, of Toronto, are renewing their acquainâ€" tance around town for the past week. Mr. and Mrs. John Nichol yisited friends in Bentinck last week. Misses Charlotte McLeed and Maggie McKechnie are home from the Queen City. Mr. and Mrs, Richard King of Grand Valley visited the latters mother, Mrs. Watters, last week. McLeod. of Stayner, was the guest of his brotherâ€"inâ€"law, Mr. W. Mc Cannel, a few days last week,. Miss Susie McKinnon, is recoyered from her recent illness so as to be able to drive around. Mr. Peter McKechnie and his mother, drove through our burg, last Friday morning, en route to Orillia, they will visit the latter‘s parental home in Oro and renew old acquaintances in Barrie, Collingwood, etc,. Mrs. Canrpbell, of Fairbain, is at preâ€" sent visiting at her brothers, Mr. H. Mceâ€" Donald, Durham Road Glenelg. Mr. and Mr. Loomis, of Cleveland, are visiting at Mr. D. G. McLean‘s. The Eden Bros. intend raising Mr. Kert‘s barn the last of this week or the first of next. The Rev, Mr. Kitchen will preach to us next Sabbath. Miss Hattie Eden intends leaving for Sault Sts. Marie on Friday next, where she intends to remain with her sister Mrs, Jolhn E. Davis, We hope Hattie will have a pleasant trip. Mr. and Mis. Richard Hoy were the guests of Mrs, Moffat on Sunday. Mrs. Dennett is visiting at her mother‘s Mrs. James Bruce. We were a little disappointed in rain coming the night of the garden party. but did better than expected the am‘t being $26. We have been furnished by the Rev. Chas. Cameron, with the following abâ€" stract of a sermon by the above well known divine. We believe it will be inâ€" eresting to our readors who knew the deâ€" ceased, and others. man he places himself under a skilful master. _ Ifone is laboring under some discease that is hurrying him fast to the grave, will he not put himself at once under a skilful physician : So if a man is to crucify the flesh, his first step is to place himself under Christ. The way of Jesus was always to get people to _ put â€" themselves un(fiar Him. Come unto me: Look unto me, follow me, believe me, are and were his words to all. Itis under him, through him, " And they that are Christ‘s have eruâ€" cified the flesh with the affections and lusts"; Gal. 5, 24. The proper way to perform this duty of crucifing #e . flesh successfully is first to become a Christian. When a man wants to become a good tradesâ€" II. Let us now proceed to apply the text, and to apply it to ourselves as Secerllltly commemorating the" Lord‘s eath. T4 st Sabbath it was our privilege to sit at the table of the Lm'(‘. What is our duty toâ€"day? Are we to say let us lie down and sleep, or, let us rise up and work ? The former speech let us sleep, &c., is the speech of the bypocrite and of the formalist ; the true Christian says, let me rise up and work, his aim and desire is to forget those things that are behind and to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, To day I will attempt I. To explain the text, and, . Toapâ€" ply it. * 1, The word flesh in the text sometimes means human nature. *"*And the word became flesh,"Jno. 1; 14. 2. It means the body as distinet from the soul. "A spirit has not flesh and olood as ye see me have," Luke 24. 20. But here it gneans, Corrupt nature, the evil heart being the root of all evil thoughts and actions. 3. In the way of explanation, "the affecâ€" ions and lusts" are the fruit of the flesh, the root. To prove this we have only to look at the preceding verses, where we find no less than seventeen kinds of this fruit specified, namely, adultrey, fornication, uncleanness, &c., sins in heathen lands stand first: and wrath, strife, sedition, heresies, &c., sins of civilized countries being in the rear of this horr:ble list of the affections and lusts of the ffesh, Again notice the meaning of the word crucify. â€" Orucifixâ€" ion was a horrible Geath, the hands and feet were nailed to the cross.â€" The vital parts were untouched. It was a slow painful, shameful and sure death. Such is the way the Christian has to deal with the flesh, and with its affections and lusts. Quite a number of our League intend rxoing to Holstein to the Couyention on Friday next. In the way of explanation, observe the name given here to believers, "they that are Christ‘s." _ This is a beautiful, honorable and comforting name. They are so called because God gave them to Christ and because Christ gave Himself for ihem in _ obeying, _ sulfering and dying for their sins, because He called them, and united them to himself He rose for their justification and enterâ€" ed heayen to prepare a place for them and by baptisin and sitting at his table they are under vows of obedience to him. It is proper then to call them "they that are ()Lrist’s.” A SERMON by the late Rov. JAMES CAMERON, PRICEVILLE. VARNEY. +4 «tm «+ &6 > TORONTO by him, and with him the work is to be carried on, Beware then of the comâ€" mon mistake, I will crucify the flesh: first and then I will come to Christ. I will come when I reform and become a better man, thisis Satan‘s teaching to which we are not to listen. We are to come to Christ as we are, and with all our wants. He will surely help us. Just as I am, and waiting not, to rid my soul of one dark blot. To thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, Oh! Lamb of God, I come." _ Christ is the beginning, \ the middle and the end of all true relâ€" igion. From the text we see the distincâ€" tion between justification and santificaâ€" tion, they that are Christ‘s are pardoned and justified which is an act of God‘s free grace. _ In it the old man is nailed to the tree but is not dead; hence the need of being santified. In one the sinâ€" ner‘s condition is changed, in the other his character is. To rest upon justificaâ€" tion without sanctification is antinomiâ€" anism, and{ito rest on sanctification withâ€" out justification is mere legalism, but to unite both together constitutes a true Christian. Sanctification is a slow and painful process, â€" It is as Christ said like pluckâ€" ing out the right eye, and the cutting off the right hand that offended and casting them from thee, Mat. 5, 2980. This is not to be done in the literal sense, â€" As sone men understood it, for instances are known of such men who inflicted severe wounds on their own bodies in the way of obtaining sanctificâ€" ation. â€" But we have better iHustrations of what the crucifying of the flesh means in the case of Noah carying on the building of the ark when alt his neighâ€" bors were eating and drinking and makâ€" ing merry at his expense. _ Ailso in the case of Abraham when he left his counâ€" try and lus father‘s house and kindred to go to a land of which he knew nothâ€" ing. â€" Was it not a crucifixion of the flesh when Moses chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God then to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season,. _ Also David and his three comâ€" panions chose pulse and water rather than the wine and dainties that came from the King‘s table, then Saul cast in his lot with the de€pised sect and became a preacher of Christâ€"he was persecuted We can get illustrations of this point in our own daily life. _ Is it not a crucifyâ€" ing of the flesh when a man or a woman whose clothes are getting shabby will rather bear the remarks of their neighâ€" bots than forsake the house of God? When a man who is of a worldly, savâ€" ing, narrow, stingy disposition takes a $5 bil!l and give it to the cause of Christ when his neighbors are it may be giving only ten cents? _ Surely that man has begun to crucify the flesh. Likeâ€" wise is the man who ceases work earlier on Saturday evening at a busy time that bhe may be fresh for the dutics of the Sab! ath _ It is Sabbath morning when the flesh crles for a little more slumber, he is up in time and ready to go on foot or in his conveyance to the house o God, despising to look at the newspaper or at. the novel on that holy day,. Is it not a crucifying of the flesh when a man says in time of haryest, to his many hired seryants ~Come let us worship God before we go 10 the harvest field" and on Wednesday evening he calls aloud "stop work and let us go to the Prayer meeting. _ When a man abuses you by his tongue or ;)en. for you to say nothing but to pray for him. and forgive and do him good is certainly crucifying the flesh. _ I have not spoken of the grosser sins of the flesh, such as adultry, drunkenness, Sabbath breaking revellings, etc., because I have no time,. and, there is perhaps no necessity to Ispvnk of them to the commun®icants of Mrs. Jas, Hemstock, accompanied by her daughter Annie, leaves this week to visit friends in Chesley, Mr. Dive Hinks and his sister visited at Mr, Neil McDonald‘s last week. Insist on having just what you call for when you go to bur Hood‘s Sarsapâ€" arilla, the One Trye Blood Purifier and nerve tonic. Found on the road to Priceville, a white handkerchief with a red border and money tied in the corner. Owner may haye it by callingi at Mrs. A. Mcâ€" Intyre‘s of this place. . The bricklayers are busy at Ferguâ€" son‘s. Nolack of music wflile Dan reâ€" mains in the Valley. Mr, Dan McDougall has his imolement house completed. â€" Dan will find it a great improvement. Mr. Angus McDonald leaves this week for Vaughan where he intends to reâ€" main for the harvest, Angus will be izreat,ly missed as he is one of the Valâ€" ey‘s best young men. Mr. Sandy McDonal in Vaughan last week, Miss Tena McDonald, of Yeovil, is spending her holidays at her father‘s, Mr. Neil McDonald of this place, _ Quite a number from here attended the picnic. held in McDirmid‘s bush, They all seemed to have enjoyed themâ€" selves especially Alex. and Archie, Miss Nester, of Durkam, is visiting at Mrs, A, Maciutyre‘s at present, this Church, but when the flesh is cruciâ€". fied in the vital part, such as, pride, sloth, selfishness, eic., the greater sms will always dry up,. _ Now in closing let me urge on you my dear young friends to begin the duty of erncifying the flesh in the right way and that. is to begin it in the name oi Christ. Glose with him. and lay hold of his strongth and you will be finally more than conquerors. To all of you I say, look at the adâ€" vantages you will have by crucifying the flesh, _ You will have the blessed help and presence of the Holy Spirit, :m«‘ of good angels. _ After OChrist had resisted Satan angels ministered unto Him _ Your own graces will grow. By keeping down the weeds your plants will grow better; you will be a living epistle of Clwist, you will attain to a blessed assurance of faith here, and a co urse of life hereafter. Let me urge upon you to watch acainst the first thought in the wrong divection. â€" Guard against going near places and persons where you are tempt ed, keep away from the ballroom, and barroom. _ If you will frequent them you will have no relish for the Prayer meceting and the House of God. Pray without ceasing, read the word of God continually, wait upon God and He will surely bless you. The election is over at last and we know that we are right in su{'ing that the right man is in the right place, BALSAM VALLEY.
