Pres, Clark made a stirring adaress on ‘"*A world encirelâ€" ing movement °* and one is forced to conclude it must be when we read that the Junior Badge Banner to the country making the greatest proporâ€" tionate increase during the year goes to Spain, : â€"Tory newspapers have been busy lately making changes in the Liberal cabinet, and predicting disastrous times for the government in the process. These machine tactics should receive their quietusâ€"for a whileâ€"since the Premier has saidâ€""I know of no changes, actual or contemplated." When Sir Oliver Mowat tells Eaurier he is an incapable and Laurier gets even with Mowat, Cartwright, Tarte and a few others by describing them as a " nost of traitors," will be a fitting time to predict changes. __â€"The Jubilee celebrations â€"have given an immense impetus to the idea of Federation, and no one thing has contributed more to that end than the presence and prominence of our own premier. Ontario province is larger than any of the Australian "colonies, " yet her chief magistrate is not thought of because a greater than Hardy is here. =â€"The Sultan has practically defied the powers, and will not agree to leave Thessaly. The powers are now invitâ€" ed to ‘"‘make a demonstration " at once to compel the Sultan to yield! How the Sultan will laugh! Is Thessaly to be another Armenia ?2 ; â€"Cape Colony has distinguished it self in a practical way. She has made the Imperial Nayy a present of a first class battle ship, ~Canada‘s gift was of & commercial nature, the Cape‘s is proâ€" tective, both are extremely pleasing to the British people. â€"Thé English Rudgeâ€"Whitworth Bicycle Company have made a cut of almost 50 per cent on their wheels, and a mild panic among manutacturâ€" ers has been the result. Importations will be stopped and the cut may come ‘ here too. ' â€"Pres. Kruger suggested to his exâ€" ecutive and it was dote, that as a fitâ€" ting act of grace at the jubilee period, the only two remaining prisoners of the raid should be liberated. _ He is a tactful gemerous old man. â€"Mr. and Mrs, (Gla@dstone have been entertaining Sir Wilfrid, and the premiers of {New ‘South Wales and New Zealand. The Grand Old Man is still one of the sights of England. â€"A case of murder and suicide in a house of ill fame in Montreal last week, A liquor crazed man shot a woman, not the one he meant however, and then suicided. Fruits of the traffic. Premier Sir Wilfrid Laurier goes to Paris on July 17, and will later visit Switzerland, He will then return to England and sail for home about August 19. â€"The heated term caused nearly 400 deaths in U.‘S. cities. Editorial Note and Comment. ce e Gnee * + &6 + DURHAM, THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1897 ONTARIO ARCHIVEsS TORONTO We were (i)leased to meet Mr. Beaton and his lovely bride o grounds. A Baseball Match between Edgehill and Zion was played on a field nearby, Zion bemg the winners, the home cntcz- er getting an injured eye weakening his team. It was a splendid day for a booth, and it was well patronized, The fireworks at night were quite a success we were told though it caused a few mishaps by startling horses. Next year the committee intend to have the grounds lit by electric light. The Wire Walking hy Prof, Wm, Locheed was quite a thrilling exhibition, and his nerve and skill were duly apâ€" plauded. Glenelg tug of war team was ready but Bentinck for some reason wasn‘t. so this event did not come off. The speeches of the day were deliverâ€" ed by Dr. Mearns, Hanovyer, and Geo. Binnie both of who launched out with eloquence on features suggested by this Jubilee year. _ Barrister Batson was also honored and acquitted himself well. In the course of his remarks, he made a gentle hint that the two last named speakers were political aspirants, and‘ being a lawyer he ought to know. ‘ Edgehill picniecs may haye to do withâ€" out Chrissty Williams some time, (in tne far future we hope) but at present he seems a fitting father to the whole comâ€" mumity,. His racy description of the 47 years growth of Glenelg babies he has witnessed, ‘"*and begorra they are still growiug" is always taking, but the viin of the old man is best seen in his soug, Without a doubt the first in the list of attractions to the grsatest number is the dancing platform, and though the thermometer was at 95 degrees hundreds of both sexes "swung and cleekit" the whole afternoon and well into the night l to the inspiring strains of varied music, violin, fife and bagpipes of the well known _ McDonald Bros., Priceviile. Whew ! It made one hot to look at them. Is it right to dance? Asked the C, E. Workers at Dromore just one week before. ‘The engrossing nature of the amusement is well shown here but the | yuestion of its rectitude it is safe to sa was far from the thoughts of the youlZ' and beauty who tripped the light fanâ€" tastic on the planks that day. A platform surrounded with canvas scenery, once no doubt brilliant, but now showing the touch of time was taken possession of by Mr. Jno. Moffatl as Chairman early in the afternoon and for 3 or 4 hours speech and song was presented to those who were not enamâ€" ored of the dancing. _ An organ, taken there by Mr. 8. T. Orchard, Agent, Durham, was cleyerly handled by Miss Black, Durham, as an accompanyâ€" ist. Prof,. Peel gaye some cornet solos to the delight ugthe crowd. _ Mr. 8. T. Orchard was rapturously enchored in the comic line, as was also Mr. Leighton. Miss Mary Gordon, our young rising elocutionist, captured Edgehill by her skill as a declaimer, nu(P though the scream of the bagpipes broke into the middle of her selection she held bravely on and held her audience too. They make a nominal charge, but dear me, many can get over the fence and are lost to the gate keeper. _ The funds go to pay entertainers, for the objec. of the commiitee is to provide a day‘s fun and pleasure for the numerous visitors. L And they feed these thousands too, and no miracle about it, Edge Hill baskets seem bottomless, their waiters are legion, and the stuff of the best. How they do it ? Well, they do it, It is abommunié{ affair, with a comâ€" mittee or set of officers elected annually they work with each other to make the event a success. This year is their greatest in point of attendance some estimating the crowd at 2000, aud from vhe vehicleâ€"lined road and the swarming bush there might well be. And older _ heads too are there from reasonable distances, the babies are brought out, for in many cases no one will stay at home to keep them, and so A uecomr generation is growing up with the picnics as their oldest memory, Edge Hill Picnic is a great institation. Once a year the directors get the an» nouncements made and at once for mrles nround every young man and maiden have thoughts of being present. gestion, bad taste, coated i tongue, sick headache, inâ€" > somnia, ete.
