The Ring of Htaly‘s Nephew HMas an Origâ€" Inal Plan for Invading the Arctic Reâ€" glonsâ€"Me Ascended Mount 8t. Eliag Last Year. Prince Luigi, of Savoy, Duke of Ab ruszi is c»rtainly a born explorer, Otherwise, how account for the fact that this man, who is a nephew of the King of Italy, should at present be bent on making & trip to the North Pole. Moreover, this is not the first proof which he has given of his love ol adventure. As our readers know, he ascended Mount St. Elias, in Alaska, last year, thus accomplishing a feat which had baffled several older and more experienced men. The Prince‘s great aim now is to apâ€" proach nearer the pole than Nansen did, and in the depths of his heart there is a wild hope that he may bhave the good fortune to plant the Italian flag in the very centre of the pole.He is especially spurred to action just mow, because he knows that Captain Bverdrupp is also bent on a Polar exâ€" pedition, and the idea of playing secâ€" ond fiddle to any one, even to the reâ€" doubtable Sverdrupp, is abborrent to hbim. HELPED BY THE KING. King Humbert, though he hesitated at first, has at last given his sancâ€" tion to his nephew‘s plan, and has even shown hi$ practical interest in it by promising to contribute 500,000 lire towards the expenses of the expediâ€" tion. The Prince does not propose to follow in Nansen‘s footsteps. His plan is to go by sea as far as Francisâ€"Joseph‘s Land and to complete his journey by means of sledges and Eskimo canoes, known as kayaks. Apparently he is the lirst to conceive the idea of arriving »t the North Pole in this manner, but the arguments which he brings forward in iavor of nis plan show that ‘he is not actingy rashly or without, due foreâ€" complished SU BON Tea TPd H 1@ N In other to a sot T€ era recommenued LNJaL 12 tics he employed during Italian campaign, but uw his recommendation came The expedition will certi for lack of funds. He is of slight build, medium bheight, and, so far as outâ€" ward appearances go, is not to be comâ€" pared to such hardy explorers as Norâ€" denskiold, Nansen or Sverdrupp against whom he has fearlessly entered in competition. That small motives are at the botâ€" tom of many illustrious actions, is a modern discovery. It has been established that we do not wax diviner by dragging down the gods to our level. Nothing among the many marvels of modern invention is more astonishing than this same disâ€" covery. By his invention Herr Mayer says the moon can be brought within a distance of 100 yards, in fact, and exâ€" plored most thorovghly. Prof. Gates‘s combined _ microscopeâ€"telescope _ was brought to be a marvelous contrivance, but this latest addition puts it quite in the shade. In his success Herr Mayâ€" ‘er has made a wide departure from cusâ€" tomary methods. In fact the monster telescopes do not figure in his calculâ€" ations whatever. Without going into a long drawn out or technical explanâ€" ation of the apparatus he bas conâ€" structed, it is a novel affair, in that an enormous parabolic mirror 50 yards in diameter that revolves upon a fixed axis is the main scheme of the apparâ€" atus. This concave mirror which is of the ordinary "silvered" glass has a small convex parabolic mirror suspendâ€" ed at its facus; and this small mirror focuses the rays received from the largâ€" er ones, and throws them on the lens of an immensely powerful microscope. Thus a clear and brilliantly lighted picâ€" ture of the moon or star under examâ€" ination is brought immediately under the microscope, which has a magnifyâ€" ing power of many million diameters. Herr Mayer explains that it will thus be possible, almost, to see the time by the watch of the "man in the moon,‘ or to see the bridges, if any, over the canals of Mars. A whole family suffering. Then Ishould think you would do your share, she suggested. Shortly thereafter everything was arâ€" ranged satisfactorily. The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has bean able to cure in all it stages, and that is Catarrh.
