In their retreats are numerous caves, luxâ€" uriously fitted up and containing subâ€" sistence sufficient for months. Thus are the bandits enabled to set at defiance all the forces of law and order. > HE IS A MODERN ROB ROY Mundreds of Miles of Territory at Their Mercy â€"They Are the Terrors of Four Western Amerlcan States, The Governors of Colorado, Utah, Wyâ€" oming, and Idaho, recently met in conâ€" E+1 nce to devise means for executing th» notorious Butch Cassidy and his gang, who for years have readersd iife and p1cparty unsafe in certain .cccirions or‘L>se itur States. *"BHutch < and his band ars ihe cutâ€" growth of the rustlers of six years ago Since then they have broadened their fleld, and increased their numbers. It is no idle boast to say that the leaders of this notorious band has 500 men at beck and call. Their depredations are upon a scale never before reached in the history of frontier crime. All the conditions are favorable to them. They know every foot of the vast territory in which they operate, taking in, as it dses, the wildest and most inaccesâ€" sible portions of four States. Every maa of them is thoroughly familiar with frontier life in its rough phases. The forces are subâ€"divided into fivre bands, each controlled by itsa own leadâ€" er, with Cassidy as the suprems powâ€" er. The outlaws now practically control the sparsely settled region extending irom central Wyoming southâ€"westerly through morthâ€"western Colorado, and Utah, and almost to the Arizona line. Marauding and murderous bands conâ€" duct their raidse with restraint. The thefts of livestock run into the milâ€" lions. There are fivs camps where the varâ€" fous bands make their headquarters, each of which is well nigh inaccessible except to the bandits themselves. Two of the most famous arse " Robbers‘ Roost" and " Hole in the Wall." The former is in South Central Utah, on the San Rafaele River, a few miles west of the Green River; The latter is hidden away somewhere in that wild, mountainous district to the northâ€"west of Casper, Wy. _ M s > The other camps are located in Tetâ€" on basin, near the eastern border of Idaho, and south of the Snake River ; Powder Springs in Southâ€"Western Wyâ€" oming, near Colorado, and about 50 miles east‘ of thr Utah line, and Brown‘s Park, taking in the northâ€"wesâ€" tern corner of Colorado, and the northâ€" eastern portion of Utah. It igy not deâ€" finitely known in just which state the Brown‘s Park camp lies, but it is thought to be across the line in Colâ€" orado. § These bands are composed of men of the most reckless and desperate character, long accustomed to deeds of orime. Whenever a murder is commitâ€" ted in the mountain states or a conâ€" viet escapes from a penitentiray the criminal flees to the nearest of these retreats, where ha is safe from purâ€" wult. In this manner the ranks of the bandits have been recruited up to a strength conservatively estimated at eration. Even " Calamity Jane," in the old days of her association with ‘"Deadwood Dick," could not surpass these picturesque females in their wild career. About a year ago " Butch" Cassidy and " Bill" Ferguson, one of his trustâ€" ed lieutenants, dashed into the town of Price in broad daylight, held up the paymaster of the coal company and rode off with $8000 before the crowd of bandstanders realized what had hap pened. This is but a simple exploit. Bank robbers are but side issues with them ; merely incidental to their grand chief occupation of cattleâ€"stealâ€" ing. Two deputies traced Cassidy and Ferguson to their lair at * Robbers‘ Roost." They were fully 24 bhours beâ€" hind, and their approach was known long before they arrived at the narrow trail leading up into the rendezvous. Cassidy was in a jovial mood and he conceived that it would be more fun to capture the deputies and make sport of them than to kill them. So he acted accordingly. 3P ton slaughter. In several instances foolhardy officers who have invaded their strongholds have been disarmed, dismounted and sent home. C The deputies were about half way up the trail, when, just at a bend around a sharp point of rocks, they beard the sharp command. * Hands up !‘ Half a dozen guns were staring them in the faces not 20 paces away. To add to their discomfiture a rudely scrawled note was pinned on the breast of each, which read: "We are deputy sheriffs sent out to capture ‘Butch" Cassidy and his gang. When found send us home." A representative of Reuter‘s Agency says the London Telegraph, has had a conversation with Sir T. Salter Pyne, CS.I., who has just arrived in England after two years‘ absence in Kabul. He was detained in the Afghan capital‘ in consequence of the Indian fronâ€" tier troubles. Asked regarding the situation when he left Kabul, Sir Salâ€" ter said: "Everything was quiet, and all the various factions thoroughly unâ€" der control. In fact, I may say I never knew Kabul to be more tranquil than during the time the Afridi risâ€" ing was in progress,. There was, it is true, some anxiety at first as to how it could affect us, but so firm is the Ameer‘s rule that the people remainâ€"‘ ed passive. Thers was some attempt ata rising among the Loghmanis near Jalalabad. At the moment it became known the Ameer sent down & force and nipped it in the bud. The abortive movement was a direct outcome of the frontier trowbles, the Loghmanis deâ€" claring their intention of preaching a jebhad, Within a very short time, bowever, the leaders were brought back into Kabul, and Abdurrahman succeeded in so overawing the other tribesmen that at no time was there any disturbance of order." Asked as to what was really the Ameer‘s attitude towards the British Govermnment in connection with the frontier war, Sir Salter said: "I am very happy that my prophesies of past years with regard to the Ameer‘s atâ€" titude have proved to be true, and I am glad to have had the opportunity of seeing for myself how true an ally to Great Britain his Highness has proved himself to be, When the Afridi deputation came to solicit the Ameer‘s assistance, Abdurrahman kept them at Kabu! until after the war was over." Sir Salter told the following story of the Ameer: "A few days before leaving Kabul, the Ameer, picking up a small knicknack which happened to be on his table pointed to the words, ‘Made in Germany,‘ which appeared on it. ‘Doâ€"you know what this means? said his Highness. ‘Your country is degenerating,‘ he added. ‘England has been sending out bad things for many years past, and so, to protect themâ€" selves, France and Germany and Rusâ€" sia decided in future to mark everyâ€" thing that they manufactured.‘" THE HEALTH OF THEIR DAUGHâ€" TERS SHOULD BE CAREFULLY WATCHED.
