In later life, he was a supply minister and superintendent of Missions in Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. Gold returned to England after 1910 and lived there for the remainder of his life. He died at Luckwell Bridge in Somerset on 19 October 1938. He is buried in the parish cemetery at Winsford.
Rev. Gold married Elizabeth Ann Reed, daughter of David Lusk Reed, on 7 July 1859. She was born at Whitby Township on 22 July 1942. Together, they purchased a house on the corner of Byron and Dunlop Street.
When Elizabeth's father died in 1887, she received an inheritance of $200000 which she gave to charity. She borrowed an additional $17000 from friends, which she also gave to charity. In 1903, the Golds had to sell all their real estate to pay the creditors and Elizabeth and Matthew split up.
Elizabeth moved to Toronto where she died on 25 September 1926. She is buried at Union Cemetery in Oshawa.
Elizabeth's and Matthew's only son, William Scott, was born at Whitby on 17 January 1864 and died at Whitby on 23 December 1909. He is buried at Union Cemetery in Oshawa. - Date of Original
