- Yeoman Gibson was born at Ebberston, Yorkshire, UK on 31 March 1828. He came to Canada in 1847 and started a business as a clerk and bookkeeper in Whitby. He was also a partner in a grocery business with William Laing and Robert Yarnold until 1864. Gibson later opened an independent known as Old Number One on the southeast corner of Brock and Dundas Streets.
Gibson was a member of the Whitby Methodist Church and he and his wife donated a silver communion set to the church in 1854 which was in use for more than 100 years.
Gibson was a member of the Composite Masonic Lodge, a Town Councillor 1863-66, Reeve of Whitby 1876-77, and Warden of Ontario County in 1877.
He lived with his wife Belinda and their son William in a house on the west side of Centre St. N., just south of Mary Street. He died at Whitby on 28 December 1894 and is buried in Salem Cemetery in Kinsale.
