- William Hewis was born at Hamer's Corners (Dundas and Anderson Streets) on 8 August 1865. He worked at his father's butcher on Brock St. S. and in 1882 he and his brother, George, took over the business. They moved the butchers to the McMillan Block (later called Hewis Block) at 121 Brock St. N. Hewis retired in 1939.
Hewis was a member of Whitby Town Council from 1903-1905 and was a member of the Whitby Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years. He joined the Eastern Star Lodge No.72, Independent Order of Oddfellows, and later rose to the position of Noble Grand.
Hewis died at Whitby on 11 February 1964 and is buried at St. John's Anglican Cemetery. He was Whitby's oldest native born resident at his death. - Date of Original
