Whitby Ce IebrQtes 100 Years 0f Progress m 1855-m 1955 DAILY lIMES -GAZETTE Cemiennial Editien Proud of Her PQast, Whitby-Looks With Conf*ienci BY JAMES H. ORMISTON1 Today the Town of Whitby stands at the door of a new century. i Looking back over the past century, wc pause reverent- ly and gratefully to pay tribute to the earlv founders of the town for their faith and visgion, transplanted into ac- tion. Looking ahead. with that same fait h and vision, but under circumgt-ances se much differen't from thýose con- fronting .the earlv town builders, we have reason to be prou(l of our heritàge, made poss-ible for us by their sacri- ficial work on our behaîf. and to hope and believe that iWhitby will rnarch forward ()n moiral, spýiritual. induqtrial, social, cultural, education and other fruitsq of wýelfare and influence to a greater destiny. Let us he assured thiat in this new and better n for the town and for the citizens, individual andcoltie sacrificial effort will pliay an imi- portant. and vit-al part. (hti7enýhiîi and civic pride Eire inseparale, se are sincerit:. and truth in our loyait ies. Whithy is a growing te;' n, blessed with hundreds (-f citizens inalal vocations, in ail walkq of life, ench rnaking his or her contribution to its contanued progres,%. eTo The Future We might at this time, as has been done in the pages of this newspaper for the past three years in the series of articles on "Early Days ina Whitby", recall the achieve- ments, large and small, of those who down through the century labored long and well on our behaif. Because they were hurnan, they macle mistakes, and because they had an honest conception of what their duties were, accomp Ils.hed so rnuch. As we look around us and see onevery hand evidence of the manner in which they went ab6UL their daily tàsk.î. looking to the future, as we do todayl we are forced to admit that they bujîlt better than they knew the foundations of the Town of Whitby. We have much to learra from the past in Whithy's history. T4,. knowledge we gain and cherish will serve as useful sig>l poqts to the future. Where others failed we may be succes5;, fuil. Where they achieved success we may, because Wb have qo mran more opportunities, capitalize on that au c- cess one hundred fold, yes, perbapa,-, a thouland fold. WVe think today, and rightly too, of growth as a. town, our fine churches, ichools, hibrary, arena, public uitilities, swimming pools, parks, playgrounds, our beaû- tiful tree-line.d street.a, beautiful homes, and cf the indus- trial growth we are now experiencing coupled with a gmtà housing development and the new spirit of faith and Con. fidPnctý that appears to be abroad. Many of these are - e- viewed ina this special centennial section of The Timies- Gazette We think or the many men and wonien in iAU phases of our growth and development who have made and are making their contributions to make Whitby a better Uplace in which to live. We think of those who, quietly, never in the limelight, but in the- forefront, who nefflr Inake newspaper headlines, but who, nevertheless, in th.fir own way, are making their contributions to happine-ma"i welfare of our citizens We are proud ai the fact that ,w.î have been placed by a divine providence in a goodly Vsnd,- that as a town-aur- lives have failen in pleasant places. if we are prepared to go forward in thé. spirit of early fouad-4 ers, a.nd o! thase af today who believe In Whit.by, -me cen a.ccomplish more in the future than was ever debÎWd possiblef in the pustW. must b. right In aur thlnlcing V9d charitable in &ailt.hings.
