It was her first trip, and she was a littie less than enthusiastic. In fact, she had been nervous about the whole thing for several days. 11I gave blood several years ago," I recalied. "Strangely enough it was always the big ones that keeled over.1' "K e e 1le d o v e r, "my wife cried, "what kind of a butcher shop are you taking me to anyway?" I"D o n't be sil1l1 y, "l1said. "They ne ed blood. The banks are low, and ih donating you are rendering a great human service.t" "The sermon I can do without,I" my wife growled, "I want to know what it will be like afterwards." "They t ak e you i n for coffee and i e t y ou r e s t a few minutes," I ex- pJaiîned. "Weli it must be an awful strain on you, if youhave to goand sitdown afterwards, " my wife said. "You'll laugh about it ail the way home", I replied. "l'il just bet I will, " she snorted. We I in e d up to f111 in our cards, and for the first time my wife smiled. I think her earlier nervousness was depar ting. Denis O'Connor Students 'Hockey Night in Canada', at least when theToronto Maple Leafs are pi ay ing thei r Saturday night home games, will be brought a little closer to the Whi tby res ident this season withthespreading circulation of some 3, 600 tickets being sold in promotion of the Denis O'Connor High School Hockey Lottery. Students trying to raise the $20, 000 needed to meet this year's operating costof the school, are a prime exam- ple of the resourcefulness of today's young people, and are show ing to this community, and to surrounding munici- p a i i ties, a heart-warming degree of good old fashioned school spirit. A i t hough Mayor Desmond Newman p ur c h a s ed the first ticket only last week, the lottery idea, according to S c h o ol Principal Sister Mary Moyle wasworked out by students during the summer months. At another table a lady tested our blood for type. As she pricked my finger i let out a howl. The lady looked up startied. "It's only a little pin prick", she said. "For heavents sak e", my wife growled, "people are looking at you. " A lady took my wife to a cot down one of the aisles, while I was led to another. The place reminded me of an army barracks. As I headed for my cot, I noticed the tube running from a man's arm. Hisbloodwas draining into a bottle at the side. "What's thematter withyou?" asked the nurse. "I think 1Im going to throw up", I replied. "Nonsense", she said. "Have you given before?" "Yes, several years ago", I whis- pered. "Well then, you know it's a simple operation. " "Don't use that word", I cried. Several donors raised their heads to look at me. As she inserted the needle into my ar m , my feet shot straight up, and I let out a screech that could be heard two blocks away. " "l'm upsetting everybody ? " I cr ied. I saw my wife heading for the lounge and managed a weak smile. It seemed an eternity before they took the needle away. Others had come after me, and had already left. As I sl id off the cot, I kept going... right onto the floor. Two nurses rushed over. With one on each side, Ili imped to a nearby cot. At last, my wife came along to see what was detaining me. "I don't understand it at all", the nurse was explaining, "he appeared to faint, and yet he didn't. I mean how could he faint after giving up only about five teasponfuls of blood?" "Nervousness, just a severe case of n e r v e s, " said an older nurse in passing by. "I was never so embarrased in my w ho le life", my wife muttered as we drove home. "l'il be ai r ight the next time," I said meekly. She started to laugh. "You were right", she explained, "yousaid1would laugh about it all the way home".
