Page 2, Thursday, November llth, 1971, WHITBY FREE PRESS W-- Sirs; I am enclosing a dupl icate letter fo r w arded to the Wh i tby Municipal Offices, which is as follows: Recently it has been brought to my a t t e ntion that we are t o have a new police station at an approximate cost of $900, 000. We j u s t spent a pile of money on a n o t - n eeded Hey- denshore Park Dance Hall or whatever it is sup- posed to be. It is qu i te true also I believe, t h a t we are going to build a new mun- icipal office (I d r e ad to think of the cos t of this caper). We also really n e e d a new arena (Harmon Park in Oshawa cost $750, 000 complete. ) Now th ose were the figures I want to to s s around a bit. Firstof ail if we are to get a new municipal building t h e n w hy can the police not use the old one at a sav- ingsof $900, 00? Now that we have the pol icelin a big- g e r building and have $900, 000 left over why not spend $ 750, 000 for a twin-pad arena to serve approxima- tely 2,_000or more of our younger ci t- i z e ns and o I de r ones too? You will1 also save $ 15 0, 000 this way to build a I i b rary or a good part toward it, or maybe even a swim- ming pool. Now if this $750 0 00 i s too high' a pr ice to pay for our children, then he re is another way-out idea. There are two b i g barns over at the mental hospi- t a I wh ich seem to be in f a i r ly good shape. Why notre- inforce the roof of each one (provided we*could get them) and install artifi- clal ice-making equipment in them? - JUST ONE THING You'll never pin down a true pol iticlan by gingerly pussyfooting around. I t m u s t have been with this in mind that Mr. Bert Heaver came to council. If you like your cake cut and dried, con sider Mr. Heaver the classic case of ratepayer-versus-city hall. Mr. Heaverwhorepresentedl5 bitter r a t e payers in the Bell Drive area af- f e c t e d by the severe storm of August 28th, wanted a direct explanation from counci I regarding the town's Ilability for the storm damage, and about certain a c tivi ties carried on by work crews in the BellîDrive area since the date of the storm. Likeother area residents he had had an unfortunate backup of two to four feet of sewage in hi s basement to contend with, and h a d suffered the added frus- tration of having nothing concrete done about it. So Mr. Heaver fought town fathers withthebestammunitionhehad- a form- ula of forthright questions, which dem- anded forthright answers. H i s w ell 1 - worded attack, although p r e mature, left council with a 1iittie of that proverbial egg on the face. Yo u se e, ail the while, behind the scenes, council has been doing every- thing possible on behalf of some sort of re st itution for the affected flood vic- tims. Th e on ly thing is, they overlooked telling the ratepayers about it. REA-ERS WRITE The day began asO;nl yyesterday - and then - "We regret to inform you".. these few w or d s, and the world crashes around you. A you th whose m a tu rity was born overnightbywar. Then the news blared out. "Our day of exultation"; they said it was a day of victory and now the years have passed. Tod ay we have dissention from so m any corners of the world, yet here among our people, do we remember the price paid for our day of exultation? There is an appointed time for every- thing. Today, November l1th, the child- ren in our schools have a holiday. How many of these students are aware of the Don 't try to tell us tha t the two arenas we have are adequate, because they aren't, at least not for a town on fthe move 1 ike we are - or are we? Now th at I have settl ed all y our problems on what to do w i th $900, 000 why not spend itwhere it is going t o hel p most peo- pie? By the way, where is the money comingfrom in the first place ? Stupid question, from my taxes naturally. I agree pol ice are important, but you don' t need them put in a brand new buildingwhen they can have anice of- fice in the munici- pal building, plus our children could have a good place for hockey wi th more timeon the ice to be better hockey players and people. Let's not forget the figure- skaters either. Thank-you, R. Williams. truemeaningof this day? Is it a day for the movi es for shopping? We do not revive shock with tears, but we can remember o n e November Il th when the e n t ire w o r 1ld stood still with remem- bering. Today to these children is just a day in history. 1s it lack of pride in ou r country's achievement, or indifference to the pr ice of freedom that those who should bring understanding of such pride would not give a p a r t of this day in the school s, to k e e p t h e memory of November 11th before the youth of this Canada of ours? It is a grievous wrong. Human tragedy is awaste. Our young generation should be taught to be proud of their heritage.
