Hi story w as always a problem vvith me. 1 c oul1 d neyer remember who di s- cove r ed what, let alone the year the historic event happened. 1 felt it didntt really matter because 1it h ad already happened and 'there was nothing to do but remember or forget the fact. Tonight i feel differentiy._, #History reflects periods of romance, p a s s i o n and beauty and these per lods were reflected in art and music. Tonight as 1 listenedto beautiful classical music 1 f el t w e are truly in danger of losing samething impossible ta replace. T ry it yourself. Get out an oid pop record and 11isten to i t. Sure 1It sounds nice but pr-abably a littie weird beside taday's rnusic. Butgetoutsome even aider music by such writers and camposers as Brahms, Beethoven EBach, Mozart and countless o t he rs t oa numerous ta mention, and there is just no comparison. Aithouth their music has been heard ahundred timesbefore it aiways sounds refresh ing and m os t of al1, beaut ifui. The world of classical music takes us b a c k i n h i s tory f ar ther than aur own hi story goe s as indi vi dual s and ai1 though , likeme, youmayfindhlstory duil, clas- sicai music is everything but duil. 11iike today'ts rock music sQme of the t ime but i t seems so eas ily dated anid shal11ow. When 1hear an aI d song by the Beatles, 1 arn carried back ta that time but that's it, and the trip back doesn't iast long. Wl1 th classical music I arn carrie~d 1 nioa dl fferent worl d. The rythm and the m e i odies make me feel the passion and the exci tement of an era 1 Mili neyer know. J/M DL/AIL The hard rock music of today 1is fast, en t er t a i n ing and ai ive wi th tension. itIs thiîsvery tension qualitywhi ch makes ,it almost impossible ta relax whi le listen- ing ta rock mus ic. It produces tension. It keeps the nerve ends raw. The soothing sounds of Beethovencan fi 1yaou wi th passion and relax you at the same time. The mood and feeling can do more ta ease the tension than a bel t of your favourite booze. T he m ost im portant aspect i have learned from history is ta question the future. How long will the ciassizs ne- main? Forever or maybe just 30 years from now ? So many times in the history of man we have 1los t someth ing i rrepl aceabl e and we werenIt clever enough ta pr e ven t the 1ios s. An d so the man of future had to do withaut. Sometimes it was a painting other times it was away ofilife, and shameful ly, other times it was an entire race or species. Ciassical music is rare. It is almost ail that's left of another time. Ru ssiîa just recently lost a great writer and composer named Shastako- v i ch. How m any of the grea t ones are 1 e f t ? More important, who Is going to r e pla ce the great composers we have lost ? 1 arn not optimistic. i donft think we can ever replace Beethoven or B3ach and 1 think we should enisure the great cIas- stcs are neyer forgotten. 1 once heard an old saying,- "A mnan 1 s n ot dead unti 1 he i s forgotten."
