Thursday, November 25th, 1971, Page Il MOTORING WITH Mike Burgess Another Canadian Championship has found its home in Whitby. Timmy Clark officially wrapped up the 1971 Canadian Go-Karting Championship with an imp- r es s i ve s tring of victories. He also t r a ve lied south of the border to bring home trophies for second overall in the Winter Nationals held in Georgia, and the n to Ohio for a third overall in the Spring National s, and a ninth overall in the Grand National s. But I think what's even more impres- sive is thefact that with two years rac- i ng exp erience behind him, Timmy is s t i i I only 10-years-old! lIl grant you i t helps when your father owns Family Kartways, the longest go-kart track in North America, but Timmy's parents insist on good grades at Colborne Street Public School and Timmy delivers. FamilyKartways is located on High- way 12, just north of Whitby. If you're go i ng out tha t way, drop in andîlook around, y ou tIl find go-karts ranging fromTimmy's "'Bug Stinger", a single- engine McCullough that will hit seventy m. p. h. t o full r a c e dual engine karts capableoflI10m. p. h. and carrying price tags up to $3, 000. THE FIAT 124 + 124 The Fýiat 124+124Regional Champion- ship Rally held last Saturday and Sun- d ay drew forty-three of the best raliy crews including entrants from the U. S. A. For thefifth year, the organizers of t h i s event have to be commended for a job welldone. In a rally of this size and status, it's not easy to look after more than one hundred people spread around the countryside, especially in areas like L e a skdale and Milibrook, where slip- p e r y r o ad s w e re making the driving treacherous. Due to a recent snowfall, it seemed that the roads were either icy ormuddy, but despite ail this, and brisk averagespeeds (although quite reason- able) there were no serious mishaps. Unable to enter because of mechanical problems, I drove a "back-up car' for the only local entrant, George Gilroy. George was doing quite weli in his first championship event, until his n av i g ator, Stu Brear , ran into navi- gationai difficul ties, and was unable to flIn ish the r ali y. Unfortunately Ihad p r ior knowiedge of the course and was not ai iowed to ass ist wi th the navigation. THE 'TALL PINES RALLY This weekend Maple Leaf Rally Club hosts a 550 mile National Championship E v ent c alled the "Tall Pines Rally". This combined rally and slalom race is sponsored by the Township of Chingua- cousy , and besides being a great fun ev ent, it could prove to be quite prof- i t a b I e. Cash awards and point money s h o ul d take the purse over the $I1, 000 mark, so it will certainly be well worth e n t e r i ng. Fellow Oshawa Motorspor t Club m embership lane of Whitby and i will be teaming up again for this rally. Oshawa CompetitionMotorcycle Club helda series of club trails last Sunday just north-west of Ajax. This event was a test of driving skill over very rough terrain, and despite a very cold wind, O. C. M. C. members turned out in force to display their skills. 'Tili next week, Happy Motoring!
