Page 8, Thursday, January 20th, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS r MOTORING WITH Me Burgess Bowling Scores C. A. S. C. , the governing body for Canadian motor sport recently held their seventh annual Ont- ar i o Region Awards Banquet at York University in Toronto. Despite the distance, and the basic f i f t een dollar entry fee, our area was well rep- resented by twenty-some local, residents. I would have come up with a more exact figure, but i kept 9e t t i n g interrupted by the chase for the elusive w i ne steward, who was one gentleman very much in d em and, an d frequent searches in my pocket for moreof 'those tickets'! Anyway, when it came tîime to pass out the 'hardware', our boy s(and girl) were right in there with the best. Ruth Halliday tops again! For the third consecutive year, Ruth Halliday pickedup a trophy for winning the Ladies Champ- ionship in the Driving Skili Test Series. AI so awarded in this series was Don Clement for winning his class. Ma r t in Chenhalliwas the only local racer to takehome a class win in the Circuit Racing Cate- gory. He also came tenth in the Ontario Race Or- ganizer's Awards. And last , but cer tainly not least, was local photographer Terry Williams who won the "Bob White" Trophy for continuai and consistently good 'recording' of the Sport throughout the year. AIl in all it was a very enjoyable evening. The r o a s t beef was good, as was the 'Cresta Roja', and even the band seemed to get better as the night wore on. About the~only sad moment of the night came when the John Reid Trophy (awarded rarely for exceptional service to the Sport) was awarded posthumously to 'The Whites' who were killed in a tragic plane crash. This trophy was accepted by RonIs sister and son Jim. Oshawa Motor Sport Club While we're on the subject of banquets, I'd like to m e n tion that Oshawa Motor Sport Club wil be hosting their annual banquet at the Oshawa Holiday Inn this Saturday night. The presentati6n of aw- ards, wine, dine and dance will, generally speaking, be the program for the evening. And, thanks to some of our local businesses, there are an im- pressi ve array of door and spot prizes. One prize, a pair of quartz-iodine driving lights, ai- one i s valued at somewhere around fifty dollars. So if you're interested in having a great evening, and possibly winning some of those prizes, a few t i c k e t s are still available by contacting Don or Willie Jeyes at 728-7790 or at the door Saturday evening. See you there! Here comes "Miss Love Machine" For t he fell1ows with the good looking girl- friends (or for the good looking girls without the fellows) there is only one week left to get the 'ap- p ie of y o u r eye' entered in the 1972 "Miss Love Machine" contest at Speed Sport '72. The Bosch Invitational L a s t S a t u r d a y and Sunday, the 2nd Annual B o s c h Invitational Snowmobile Races were held atMosport, where despite adverse weather cond- i t i o ns, over 500 competitors vied for a purse of over $ 14, 000. Our area was well represented, h a v i n g approximately 32 entries; in fact, one of them, Doug Haas of Oshawa, made a name for him- self when he brought home a first in both the "D" and "E" Modified classes, driving a Skidoo. Whitby resident 2nd! A r I ene Bell, a Whitby res i dent, came second in the Ladies "A" Class, driving a Polaris. Another Oshawa resident, Derek McCammand, drove both a Polaris and a Rupp to victory in the Junior "AIl and "B" classes. Also running two machines in two classes was Gary Clarke àf Osh- aw a. His Polaris brought him a 3rd place in "A" stock while he brought his Rupp in for a 5th place in "B" stock. AI M i iii gan, on his Skidoo, came 3rd in that class. He was also of Oshawa. Safety first I h o p e you w ill1 al1 join me in congratulating theseenthusiasts, and next year, let's ail get out there and stand behindour local competitors. Bet- terstill, perhapswecan double our local entries, but if you plan to practice this year, don't foeget to observe the Snowmobile Safety Rules. Until next week, Happy Motoring! Police Chief William Pilkington exam- ines th-e weapon. But this time it's only part of a military collection which was featured a t last Friday night's Wine & Cheese Party in aid of the Whitby Storm Damage Relief Fund.
