UN Whitby The Miii" "Rurnour Whitby, like any Canadian town with jus t the right distance between longi- tude and latitude to engender good in- te r- town communication, has fostered a n o t her of those mysterious municipal rumour s. The Iatest, which travelled along the grapevine to the FREE PRESS offices,, c a m e b y way of a concerned taxpayer who had just heard that 'Mayor Newman, and Doctor Hobbs had purchased Mel- Ron', at the Whitby Arena. A rumour usual ly dies a natural death when one can establ ish that it never did exist in the first place. Not wanting to get involved with the 'Joe told me-Hel1 en told him-Cecilia told her routine' back at the arena, we thought we'd check the rumour with the source being trumoured about', Mel -Ron Construction Ltd. "No damn it, it isn't true! ",. said an employeespokesman at the construction firm before we could even explain what the rumour was. The employee was another one up on the 'Free Press' too, having heard the rumour in question "at least three weeks ago. I When asked, Mayor Newman said he had heard nothing of the rumour, but em- phatically denied its implications. The 'battl e of Hobbs and Durkee' just cooling, we didn't interrogate the for- mer.
