An open letter to Mayor D. & members of Sirs, It appears to me and a lot o f other Whitby tax payers that you gentlemen are stepping over the boundaries of your duties. Let me remind you that when you arei electedyou are an i n s trument of the people, and are to be used for the majority good. No matter what yourpersonal am- bit ions and goals are, the goodof the people comes first. History can onl1 y r ecount too w e l11, the number of ambitious pol- iticians that never made i t to the top because their dreams did not coincidewith what was best for the voter. With the notable exception of Mr. Tom Edwards, the 'Des-men' have brought for th many a bombastic prop- osai, which gives r i s e to the imp- ression that P. O. W. (profit over wisdom), is fore- most in their minds. Who, good Sir, told you that the proposed Picker- ing Airport would be a boon to Whit- by ? Coul d it be that your crystal b aIl needs clean- ing? If an airport in Pickering is so beneficial ta Whitby, why are t he people of Et- obicake and Miss- issauga so hostile toaany expansion of M al t on? Many af t he se peaple live inareasmuch fur- ther remnoved from Mal ton than Whi tby i s from Picker ing. Y es , gentlemen, y ou may al so con- sult with your soothsayers on this matter. Bountiful leader in wisdom, tell your serfs why the area eastof the Mal ton Airport h a s b e e n devel- oped and indus- tr i al1 i zed, while thearea west of it has only started to e9 row w-i t hin the Newman Town Council 1 a s t f e w years. How long has Mal- ton Airport been where it is? Do y ou actually think that the area east of the Pick- ering Airport is going to be devel- oped before Mal ton T o r onto delivers every square foot ofreal estate west of it into a profit ? Take a drive through Agincourt an d northern Sc a rborough and West Hili some day, and see how much land has been set aside to wel- come the monster. If you are too busy planning our des- tiny, open your eyes and look at a- mao. How c an a gov- erning body , whether i t be Pro- v i n c ial, Federal or Municipal , pr ai se or laud a project when for a Il intentions and purposes, they have no facts about it? Possibly itmay bea boost to build onels ego and make the peasants bel- ieve that you were definitely included in, on a1 II phases of project-plan- ning. Did the pro- jectplanner, wise as we a r e led to believe, ever con- s i d er Wh!tby, or is i t to remain as is until it too can be gobbled up? How m uc h did you say the soothsayers g e t for overtime, Mr. Mayor ? Now that our dev- elIo pm en t p lans a re o n firm ground, an d in capab le hands, council can at last relish the ecstasy af seeing the "bar- W h itb y cauntry- s id e. High rises w it h their lavish t ax b enefits will r e p I ace non-int- erest, living t r e es, and wind- blown pages of the "Financial News" w i I l be in the air i n s tead of birds. The serfs will ch e er the planes coming in for a 1- a.ndIngà,qs.Jhgy 't pass over Des- neyland. After a 1 I, who wants to look at Lake Ont- ario and the pesty, unsightly seagulls ducks and geese? The concrete mon ster in Pick- ering will also produce quite a sonic boom in Whi tby for real estate speculator, round proofing and air filtration con- tractor , not to m e n t i on the jobs gained in filling in the Cranberry Marsh, asitwill *be a hazard to the planes with its l a r g e w aterfowl population. The new observation complex tobe buil t, w il be based along s i d e road 28-29, so that the million who will flock there will have an unobstructed view of th e a ir port, and the planes as they skim over Brooklin and Whi tby.
