Up to a few years ago, they were barely aware that there w a s a w o r Id outside their own. They s p e n t t heir days hunting the seal and u s i n g every scrap of meat, bone, and skin in order to survive in one of the most forbidding regions of the world. Ail this has now changed. Today, the Netsilik live in wooden hut settle- men ts and have switched from hunting to working on oil rigs, in mines, or in canning factories. But before the change came about, in the early 60's, and their traditional way of life vanished, a rec- ord of how they lived and hunted was m a d e b y t h e National Film Board of Canada. T h o u s a nds of feet of film were shot at Pelly Bay showing the Netsilik patiently squatting for up to five hours at breathing holes in the ice, waiting for s e al1 s to s u r f ace; then, when the catch is bagged, preparing the carcass for food, clothing, tents and harpoons. Nothing is wasted. This remarkable film, called "People of theSeaî 1", will1 be telecaston the CBC-TV network, in colour, Wednes- day, May 3 at10 p. m.
