Page 6, Thursday, April 27, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS No Baseball Players Strike in this Town! John MacDonald, Registrar of the Whitby Minor Basebali Association has reported a record first day turnout for '72 registration. The second and final sessionwill be held this Saturday from 1 0 : 00 a. m. until noon at the same. loc- ations; the Legion Hall on Bryon Street S ou th, the Memorial Arena in Brook- lin, Westminster United Church and 15 Almonds Avenue. Since its beginning in 1969, the W. M.B.A. has shown an in- c r ea se in registration each year, bu t ail signs point to a record jump in numbers this season. As was expected the new Tee-Bail program is proving extremely popular wi th a large turnout of 6-7 year olds seeking their first taste of baseball action. With the unusually late Spring, W.M.B.A. officiais are casting an anxious eye at the various parks where a lot of dryingout is still necessary be- fore outdoor drills can begin. With E. O.B.A. schedules starting in mid-May, coaches are hoping for a weather break. The Attersley Junior club is the only group to venture outdoors thus far, and their sessions have been confined to conditioning drills at Henry Street HighSchool where coach Mike McArth- ur has been whipping his charges into shape. Registration was at record high last Saturday when Whitby youngsters like Doug Weales and Danny Ross filed in to sign UP for baseball. Registration continues this Saturday. The W. M. B.A. this~week announced thecoaching staffs for the K of C Tyke Club and the Legionaire Pee-Wees, as both began indoor workouts. AI Mac- Donald will be at the helm of the K of C's, defending E. O. B. A. Tyke Cham- pions. MacDonald, who has just com- pleted a long and busy season as an O MHA referee will be joined by brother Keithwho has been associated with the club in a coaching and managerial role for several years, and Jim Jermyn who will be starting his third season with theKofC's. Sport is fulI of surprises, a dark horse can win, and a favourite flop dismally, soin spite of the fact this a rebuilding year for the Whitby Tyke entry, they shouldn't be written off, as a young club can come along quickly. The team has a few holdovers and is made up mainly of rookies getting their first taste of E. O. B. A. action. Doug Turner wiIl join his father George on the staff of the Legionaires. Moving from the K of C's to the Legionaires is Ken Mac- Donald whose many years of baseball ex- perience will be a valuable asset, and B i 1 1 W a t t ers, W. M. B. A. convenor, who al so had many years coaching in the Oshawa system. Doug Turner put the club through a well-organized program of claisthen- ics in their first training session last week and it appears as if the club s h o u I d h ave the strongest Pee-Wee r e p r e s e ntative in many years. One t h i n g f or certain. Every candidate for a spot on the c lub will have to h ustle as there are two or three try- ing for nearly every position.
