Macdonald Theatre in darkness, "Sleeping Beauty" held an audience of captivatedadults and chil- dren, Saturday night. Theclassic 'BriarRose', playedby Hillary Vaxvick could have just step- p e d out f r o m the pages of 'Grimm's Fa i r y tales'. Briar, wi th her flaxen h a i r c r owned by a circlet of spr ing f I o wer s and ephemeralgown, brought oohs and aah s from delighted on- Iookers. The pretty 'Queen" (Laura Bryson) wasregal as any British monarch and 'King' (Kathy Ryan) was jolly and ex- pansive, and one could easily imagine h i m enj oy ing with great gustopork pies at the royal table. 'The Purple Witch' (Paula Terry), a frightening spectre indeed with her c r uel nose and mass of tangled hair, w a s t h e epitome of wi tchery. In one scene the w itch, her billowing, purple satin cloakjust inches from the sword of the handsome 'Prince" (John Downs) who w as chasing her down an aisle, evokedgalesoflaughter from the aud- i e n c e w h ich rose to a crescendo of gigglesvwhen the prince's sword land- ed a bullseye poke. It w a s d i f f i c u 1 t to believe that 'Mo ther Pink', the benign godmother was actually young Angela McMonagle. Little Pat Cassidy youngest member of the cast who portrayed 'Patricia', 'apprentice' Norman Schilling's play- m a t e metted aill hearts in the house, an d 'Capta in of the Guards' (Joel Kaiser) was so real istical ly overjoyed in the awakening scene, he earned a spontaneous burst of hand clapping. The superb acting of the Whitby's Chi ldrens Theatre il lustratedwhat can be done with drama and young people und er the talented direction of dedi- cated people I ike Rein Selles, a drama s tudent from University of Waterloo, w h o h a s been working with the pro- gram for four months. The Children's Theatre, sponsor- b y the Whitby Recreation Department, presented two plays this season, theother being, "Sorry, Wrong Num- ber' a humourous sketch. Both Fri- day and Saturday night performances played to a full house. A t t h e end of the last showing on S a t u rday night, flowers were pres- en t ed to k e y personsvwho donated their kind assistance during the pro- gram, and Rein Selles was presented w ith a huge cake by his young charg- es. The audience was d elighted with the performance and obviously impressed w i th what Selles had managed to do in a r e I a tively short time.
