The local industry is a gravel pit and the citizen complaining about it is Dr. Peter Cave. He points out to coun- cil that the truck traffic on Thickson Road h a s increased four or five times because of the nearby gravel pit. Dr. Cave also points out that there has not b e e n e r e cted noise barriers, and he feels the gravel pit is contributing pol- lution. Said Edw ar ds, "If there is some nuisance taking place there, then obviously this council ought to do everything it can to r emove this particular form of-nuis- ance. " The nuisances seem to be increased truck traffic, increased noise and dust. The truck traffic and the dust, Dr. Cave wil I justhave to live with. As fo r t h e noise, it's a form of pollution we should ail be try ing to prevent. D r . C a v e admitted he didn't build h i s house until the late sixties which w as at least 20 years after the gravel p i t h a d b e e n in operation. It seems rather shortsighted to build a house in an a r e a of a gravel pit. Surely Dr. Cave should have been able to figure out f or himself that the pit operation w o u I d have to expand to survive. But Dr. Cave built anyway and is now com- plaining before council. The situation almost parallels that ofMississaugawherehundreds of peop- le built next to an airport and then had the nerve to complain about noise. The airports are doing a great deal toprevent noise pollution but the short- sighted people in the area are the guilty parties. If you build next to a business you have to expect some discomfort. Whenyoubuild a house you should con- sider the neighbours very carefully be- fore building. D r . Cave i s right in protesting an asphal t plant which might be built at the gravel plant. An asphalt plant would be a change of operation and should not be a I I owed. But as for the operation of a g r av el1 p i t, if the pit obeys the laws t h e n Dr. Cave has no reason to com- p 1 a in... except for hi s own short- si g h t edness in building next to an in- dustry.
