A sk a ny veteran of the great outdoorsand theylli tell you how great it is ta go camping. The hardest part about camping is s pendi1n g one th ird of youi weekend getting out of the ci ty. . . ailive. Every- body has that look on his face, as he headsoutof the city on a Friday night. Y ou can tel1 they are going ta have a fun weekend if it kilîs them. Sa there you are at the campsite. itts after 10 and the kids whined ail t h e way u p, and i t's tJarker than you know what. Let me ask yau, have you ever set upa tent in thedark? And while you were setting up the tent one of the kids got Iost in the bush and the other one had ta go patty. Mindyau that's not sa bad as getting u p t he next morning and di scover ing you set up the tent in the middle of one o f t he b ig gest patches of poison ivy yautve ever seen. For me it cames naturaî ly. When I was in Scouts I rem- ember setting up a supply tent one year r ig h ton t o p-of anestf copperhead snakes. In those days most of the tents didinthfavefloors and therewasn;t a kid in the whole camp who was brave enough ta go into that tent for even ten seconds. Wefinaîlyhit on the idea of smoking out the littie critters. We arrived at this decision after starving for about three days. We made the smokiest f ire you'tve ever seen. W.-AMPLE PARKING AT REAR 4me w as afraid the fire station would spot the smoke and we might get bombed by one of those flying water bombers. W el1 we didn' tget bombed, but we d i d spend the rest of the week eating s m oked bread and smoked vegetabl e5 and smoked weiners. If ever a bunch of kids were gaing ta get cancer it would have ta be that gang of scouts. And how about rain. Have you ever s pen t one of those lavely rainy days trapped in a tent with 500 fliles, a pack of scream ing kids who are bored to tears, a nd a wi1fe who i s on the verge of a nervous breakdown ? But camping isn't all bad. There are lots of nights when the masquitoes have go ne ta bed early and the whole gang c a n s i t around the camp f ire and eat blackenedmarshmal lows that have only been dropped in the f ire once or twice. Orhow about those nights when ev- erybody decides ta go skinny dipping and peels off their clothes and wades i n tao 34 degree water. You don'1t have a heart attack because if you pass out everybody will1 drag you onto the beach and youill1 be lying there without a stitch an. The alternative is ta wade back in toshore and be labell1ed a cow- ard and a spoil sport. Ilve found the best way ta get out of skinny dipping is ta let on you're thor- o ug h 1 y drunk. You can let on you tre sao drunk that y ou dont't dare ta go in the water because youtre Hiable ta do s om e thing fool ish 1like sl ipping under the waves for ever more. Then you sit on shore and laughyourself silly listen- ing ta al1 the gasps when the warm bod- les meet the frigid water. Camping is great sport. It gives you a chance ta m i n gle wi th nature. ..-I ike s ku n ks a nd racoons and i t teaches* you haw ta survive in the wilds... w i thout catching pneumania. If you're takingupcamping this summer 1 have a goad deaî for you on a tent that's hardîy been used... WHITBYO-HARRISON FUELS LIMITEO 21 Boc S.
