WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, July 27, 1972, page 7 The- Brunette Teaser Right foot toy ing wi th the gas pedal, just enough to maintain the grid position; knuckles clenched around the steering w h e e 1 , w ith tensed muscles ready to break for the thole' if one should open up; eyes darting from the driver ahead to the starter about to wave the green flag. . . . then the s tar ter jumps up ! the flag is out! Green, Green, Green! It's a star t, and we're off. The first corner, an 'S', is crammed with drivers and machinery jockeying for positions. A "line" is impossible, all one can do is try to get through wi th- outhitting anybody, being hit, or being run off the track. AI though having started in the num- ber three grid position, I suddenly found myself being passed on the inside, and on the outside! It was almost like being a turtle in a buffalo stampede. And you can guess who the turtle was! But be- fore I continue this updated 'Burgess version' of the 'tortoise and the hare' story, let me bring you up to date on what I was doing and why I was doing what I was doing. -- Kathy Gillette shows her winning No, it was neither Mosport nor Pine- crest, but 'Family Kartways' just north of Whitby. My 'machine' was a 4 horse- power 'special'that was actually devel- oping closer to 2½ hp, and had to strain to carry my 200 lbs. to a top speed of 20 mph going downhill! The occasion was the Oshawa Motor Sport Club annual go-kart races and picnic. And as to WHY I was racing. . .. well some of us guys who are 'speed crazy' will1 just do ANY- T HING to go fast! So t h e r e i was hunched over the s t e e r i n g wheel wi th my head between my knees, my right foot hard on the gas, my left foot fast asleep, and the rest of style at Family Kartways. PHOTO BY MIKE BURGESS me wishing I was a hundred pounds Iight- er, when a long brunette head of hair, witha 'kart' underneath it, went flying by me like I was standing still. Now I have nothing against 'women's lib', but when a good looking dol1 gets on the track, on man's OWN stamping grounds, and makes us look like we're just learning how to drive, and beats ALL the guys, comes FI RST in the FEA- TURE race. . . ail I can say that won't be censored is "Congratulations Kathy Gillette".
