August 3, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS The traffIc northbound wasn't even BIRD'S EYE VIEW -JIM QUAIL SHIP AGROUND Well it wasn't aground but I thought it would be land locked for a year or so. Actually it wasn't even a ship. But like Parker on McHale's Navy, says, "I love that kind of ship talk. " The whole thing star ted out as a rou- tine trip to the cottage at Lake Couchi- ching. Dad told me to bring the boat up on the trailer when I came up because he and my brother were going up to the cottage ear1y. Noproblem. Justmake sure the boat was filled with the water skis, 1ife pre- servers and all the rest of the usual nau- tical paraphernalia that is necessary. Mom helped me tie the boat down se- curely and eventually we shoved off. It looked like a great day with lots of sunshine and hardly any wind so the water skiing would be great. You know the kind of a day I mean. It lulls you into a false sense of security and you th in k that nothing could possibly go wrong. A Cemetery The latest in cemeteries will be a new boast of the County Town wi th the opening of a new Thickson Road pet cemetery next week. The 40' by 20', 800 square foot new cemetery, on the northeast corner of existing Ontario Humane Society prop- erty, wilI I be open to the pet-owning p u b I i c. It was cleared by Community Conscience, the local LIP project, in conjunction with Miss Muriel Sissons, President of the Whitby Ontario Humane Society. "The pet cemetery will be used in conscience by people who do not want their family pets buried in the dump, " Bobb Gibbs of Community Conscience told the Whitby Free Press. "And it's no playtoy, " he said, explaining tech- nical r e d tape Community Conscience went through in 'order to get approval to clear the land for their purpose. The Department of Agriculture, Health of Animals Branch, the Publ ic Heal th Unit and the bylaw enforcement officer all had'to render approval of the cemetery project. One regulation for projects of that nature stipulates that you must bury at a maximum of two feet in depth, at a minimum of a foot apart. bad so I was completely at ease and to- tal ly unprepared for the small explosion which occurred just around Brook Iin. Of course in her calm and col lected manner my mother screamed, "What's that!!" Aglance in the rear view mirror at the boat and trailer fishtailing gave me the hint something was amiss back there. A mess would more aptly describe i t. One of the boat trailer tires was blown to you know what and of course we didn't have a spare that would fit. So I had to unhook the trailer and drag out the tools and remove the offending wheel. I drove the car up to the boat dealer just north of Brookl in and we had to.buy a new tire. After a bit of messing around we got anew tire on the rim and drove back to the scene of the disaster and replaced thewheel. Aswegot underway I thought tomyself that we have gone through our stretchof bad luck fate had planned for us and it should be smooth sailing. Wrong again! I gotabout twomilesnorth of the boat dealer when another explosion pierced the air. Ifigured it couldn't be me since I just replaced a tire but another look behind proved me wrong. The other dratted tire had let go so I had to go through the whole process again. Needless to say the boat dealer was delighted to see me again so soon. Youcouldalmostsee the dollar signs in h i s e y e s . We changed the tire and star ted on our way again. I think I made about two miles this time before I had to stop for an over- h e a t e d wheel bear ing on the trailer. Back to the boat dealer for some special For Pets The new cemetery to be named at a later date, will have a complete record of burial system, and a $5 fee will be charged to bury one small dog or large cat. The cemetery will have some sort of unofficial opening next week. Already one local woman has asked to have her dog, which must be put to sleep, in- terred there. AMPLE PARKING AT REAR grease. More money... less patience. T h e w h ol1 e thing was turning into a nightmare. After ail this I was determined to get the fool boat to Couchiching if I had to d r a g it without the trailer. But the trailer seemed okay now and I started to get over my bad spell. The only prob- lem was the law requires you to have a licence plate on the trailer and ours fell off at the intersection of highway #12 and the Cannington Road. Four hours after I left Whitby for what should have been an hour trip to Lake Couchiching, I pulled into the cot- tage driveway. Everybody there had just about given up hope that we were ever going to show up because they were all sitting around waiting togo water skiing. All Dad could say was, "You spent how much for tires?!" My brother and a f r ie n d grabbed the water skis and shoved the boat into the water. One put the skis on while the other rowed the boat out into deep water and let down the motor. Dad was still asking Mom about the boat tires. I was still sitting on a lawn chair havinga drink to calm my nerves. Austin was sitting on the dock holding the tow rope and getting his skis straight. My brother leaned over to start the boat. %Except. . . . At home, 60 miles away, on the kit- chen table, were the keys for the boat.
