The story fromi UPI was based on a poil camiposed ai' 2,500 telephone catis across Canada. The pal!, taken twenty-eighit days befare the October 30 federal election, indicated that the Liberals appear ta be gaining ground in their efforts ta retain pawer in Ottawa, while Canservative sup- part is slipping. It shawed the Liberal and Social Credit parties gaining strength since a sirnilar poil was taken August 1 0, with the Conservatives losing popularity and the New Dernocratie Party holding even. When respandents were asked whi.ch party tliey intended ta vote for, the following percentage breakdawn enierged: AUGUST 10 -OCTOBER 2 Liberals........ 35........38 Canservatives .......1 NDP ............. ...Il1 Sacred .................. 4 Undecided ...14 ........ 13 No Answer.....16 No Answer ...16 .......13 Libraseried only those with a preference, the Libral reordd 5 pecen ofthe popular vote, the Conservatives 28, the NDP 15 and the Social Credit f ive per cent. Liberal strategists ini Ottawa.worked out their town -calculation based on the poli. working on the hypothesis the undecided and those who did not answer would tend to vote more conservatively. They estirnated that if the poil was accurate and the election had been held Oct. 2, the Liberals would have won 47 percent of the popular vote, the Conservatives 30, the NDP 1 5 and the Socreds eiglit percent. This compares with actual figures frorn the 1968 election resuits of 45 percent for the Liberals, 32 percent for the Conservatives, 1 7 percent for the NDP and six percent for the Social Credit. In the 1968 election, the Liberals captured 155 of the 264 Federal seats with the Conservatives winning 72, the NDP 22 and the Social Credit 14.
