WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAV, FEBRUARY 1, 1973, PAGE 5 One man's BY Bill Williams view Sailing buffs in our town and area are in for a treat this sumnmer when the world chanpionships in the Thun- derbird Class of racing yachts take place off Whitby Harbor. This event, originally sched- uled to be held at San Fran- cisco, is expected to attract about 35 world-class crews and their craft. San Francisco apparently could not mieet the requiremnents of the event. Harry (Tanker) Jones, of Bow- manville, President of Thun- derbird Fleet 26, advised that Whitby, runner-up choice for the event in the original bal- loting, will filI the breacli. The races, upon which a large seg- m'nent of attention of yachts- men fromn arourïd the world will be centered, will comn- prise seven events to take place between August 1 9 and 25 Better late than neyer de- partment. We bave criticized some où the entertainment presented in the Stage Door lounge of the Whitby House Hotel in the past but now feel we must throw a bou- quet when it is deserved. Sharon Louness and the Ted- dy Bears recently concluded a successful engagement there and, in oui view, did one fine job. Sharon and her group have a number of successful records out on the Boot label and we prediet ber Iatest, God Made Me A Woman, wiIl be the biggest bit yet. Elsewhere in thiese pages canl belound a phiotographi of' a Lincoln Continental. So what? Thie car, on1e ot the first of the series off' thle he in that year. was a gift to Ruth and symnbolie of the esteem in which he was held by his mnillions of fans. The vehicle arrived in Whitby after purchase by Fred Fawcett, antique car dealer here, and will find a permian- ent resting place in a museumn ini the Niagara area. The gremlins were at work again. It's an old, familiar phrase around any publishing operation that, when things go wrong typographically and for no0 good and substantial reason, then the gremliins have been at work. Well, it hap- pened to us at the FREE PRESS last week. The date- line on a number of pages in the 28-page issue said simply "January, 25, 1972." If this had happened only on one page then it would have been a plain and simple typographi- cal error, but, when it hap- pened so many times, there is only one explanation-the mischievous gremlins were at it again. The long-termi lease signed by the town and the Whitby Yachit Club should enable rapid developmnent of that re- creational facihiîy. The Club plans extensive construction projects to include a- club bouse and miany mnore mnoor- ing berths than are presently available. Handled properly the Whitby Yacht Club site can bc une ut' the tinest on, Lîke Ontario. Ih las a lot going for it including an able and amnbitiouis executive. An answer to local poli- ticians who complain they are too often the butt of criti- cism may be found in the adage that normally is applîed to whales: '6They only get harpooned when spouting." Don't know whether the retail merchants in our town have got together yet to see how they can improve their collective mnerchandising pitch but, if they have, they are sure keeping it a secret. The president of the group made a promise to hold suclh a meceting ""after the new year" whien it became apparent dif- ficulties were being exper- ienced in the pre-Chiristmnas season. Too, organizat ions re- quest ing inerchant support for local projects werc runnîing into trouble obtaining co-op- eration. It was suggested that a strong mierchants association could solve these problens. We agree. But we Lan't help wondering whether lip service only was being paid to the suggestion.
