R.3, PORT FERRY, OINT. - ...Now eYou See.i Now you see it . . . now you don't is probably the greatest disappearing act ever to be seen in this neck of woods. 1 can just picture the good Whitby citizen driving back through town on his way home from two weeks holidays camping with the family at Lake Makeanecho or some such exotie place. Ail the way home the kids have been squabbling and almost on the verge of insubordination and the 'littie wonîan' looks so relaxed she is ready te be admitted te emergency for coinplete exhaustion. Suddenly one cf the kids yells, "Hey dad, the arena is gene!" No response. "Dad, didn't you hear me?? The arena is gene!" Having had two weeks of tomfoiery dad replies, "Yes son and the meon just feul into the North Sea." The next day dad gees te the shopping plaza for greceries and does a double take when he realizes that number one son wasn't telling tail tales. Sure cnough all that remains is the front office and a big cernent pad. 1 tel] you it was almost like Mandrake himself waved his wand and showed us ail the old disappearing arena trick. There's only one catch. The arena hasn't reappeared. 1 drove by last week where the arena used te, be and there was some ice surroundcd by a few rickety benches and a bunch of kids making haîf an attempt te have fun. Although the arena was smitten down last surnmer 1 still can 't get over the suddeness of the whole sordid affair. For eighiteen years we had an A-I arena where we watched hockey games, danced, hcld meetings, auctiens and bazaars. Then ofle day it was ail ne more. It was te be the Maltese pavillion during the County Town Carnival but ail t hase plans went up in steam. The question is hew can an arena be safe one day and condemned the next? Weil of course it just didn't happen that quickly. The building becarne unsafe ta more of an extent every year until finally the last inspection reveaied the arena wauid net meet gevernmient standards. 1 rcad the engineers report and one thing that bothered me was the fact that a lot of the roof trusses were dis- ..N-ow You Don't!a covered to be only partially completed in that they were missing boits. Now it's okay for a building inspector ta say he doesn't have time te inspeet every ýbot, and that's quite truc but by gosh it looks like the engineers had enough time to in- spect ail the boîts. Another reason the arena was condemned was be- cause some of the pillars supporting the trusses were retten. Rotten! i fail to sec how a beamn could go rotten in that length of time if the proper preventien was taken to ensure that it didn't go rotten. Going by the report we had more rotten stuff in that arena than Denmark had yeu know what. Some of the aspects of the report were highly technical and a lot of the figures didn't mean beans te me, but 1 did figure out the arena roof was too weak according te standards. Last winter was pretty rough but a canvas roof would have supported the amount of snow we've had this ycar. 0f course the standards are based an extremes or maximums in the interest of public safety, and as a re- suit the only pain te the citizens of Whitby will be a pain in the walet te build a new arena. One thing is for sure. We desperatcly nced a new arena and we necd it now. Thcre's a lot of young Bobby Hulîs eut there just itching te prove a point te the world but, except for the badly crowded Brooklin Arena, they havcn't get a place te prove it. Se it appears counicil has seen fit te wavc Mandrake's wand and we will get another arena just south of the 40 1. Now we are faccd with twe or maybc three problems. The first is paying fer the arena and the second is making sure it's built properly, boit fer belt and pillar for pillar. The Iast preblem is geing te get teugher every year because government specifications will get tougher every year and that is the preblem cof properly maintain- ing the new arena se some day eightcen ycars frern now we aren't faced with a dilemma. The dilemma?? Why, the now you sec 1î. . now you don't arena trick?
