WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1973, PAGE 7 million T O R O N T O, February 26, 1973-A $2½ million Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex will be built on an 8 acre site at the north-east corner of Thick- son Road and Highway 401 in Whitby, with construction scheduled to begin in early summer. Whitby area businessman Eric Hansink will own and operate the complex under a franchise agreement to be granted to Can-Am Dutch In- vestments Ltd., by Orange- roof Canada L i m i t e d, the C a n a d i a n public company with exclusive rights to How- ard Johnson's Motor Lodges, Restaurants and Ice Creain in this country. The complex is expected to open in the spring of 1974, and will include a 5-storey, 120-room motor lodge, a 140- seat Howard Johnson's Res- taurant, enclosed year-round swiiming pool, saunas. ban- quet and meeting rooms facil- ities for up to 150, and a number of small convertible meeting rooms. A 150-seat pub will pro- vide lively entertainment, and a smaller lounge will be quieter and more intimate. On the Howard Johnson's menu will be such well-known items as deep fried clams, clam chowder, Reuben sand- wiches, grilled frankforts with Boston Baked Beans, and the famous 28 flavours of ice creamu. The Motor Lodge will fol- low the philosophy of pro- viding the utiost in comnfort and convenience for both the individual traveller and the touring family. Bedside pam- per panels will control room lights, message centre, and colour television. Little touches of luxury in cIu d e heat lamps in the bathroom ceilings to warm guests as they step out of the bath, dual shower heads to pernit women to shower without disturbing their hair, nylon clotheslines in all bathrooms, coin operated washers and dryers for guest use, and in- sulated ice buckets to store the free ice available on each floor. Large, well-lit desks pro- vide good working facilities for business travellers, and all rooms have individual heating and air conditioning controls. Some rooms will also be equi ppe d with extra wide handrails to assist handicap- ped people and the elderly. Meeting room facilities will include a series of convertible bedrooms where the beds, bu- reaus, and desks are stored in the walls during the day, and swung into place at night, in addition to the main divisible banquet room. Whitby's Howard Johnson will be linked by a free auto- for mated reservations system with other Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges and -Hotels, in Moncton, Toronto Airport, eastern Toronto, St. Catha- rines, and London, as well as almost 500 Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges in the United States.
