PAGE 8, WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, MAIRCH 1, 1973 MOTORING with Miko Burgess The recent Montreal International Auto Show, Auto '73, at Place Bonaventure, attracted approximately 200,000 visitors. Renault displayed an 1898 model, on1e of the first cars built by Louis Renault, to celebrate their 75th birthday. This car ironically sported side-mounted radiators, a popular feature on the Formula race cars of today. Mazda's new line, the RX-3, attracted a lot of interest. Toyota (C.M.I.) had the usual display of new niodels, including a new recreational vehicle called the RV2, a prctty wild looking station wagon featuring a buiît-in pop-up top. British Leyland Motors, complete with visiting digni- taries, and beautiful babes, unveiled the new Jaguar XJ 12, a very clean, no chrome, no nonsense 4 door; perfect ex- cept for those rubber tributes to California laws attached to the bumpers. Datsun (Nissan) displayed a new safety car, which doesn't look at ail like a DATSUN, and will NEVER see the road, but does have many good ideas (e.g. a periscope type mirror set up onl top of the car) that may or may not find their way in to the production lines. And unofficial- ly, they deserve the award for having the most attractive girls (blondes) at the show. Volvo had a display for the first tfime, showing tlic full line, and Mercedes-Benz proudly presonted the 450 SLC. Volkswagen's wild-hairod professor was on hand at the display to explaini the benefits of owning a VW or Porsche or one of the campers or vans, or. .. ...and 0on and on. One of the interesting cars was the new BMW Turbo, which isn't a turbine, but is turbocharged and has hîft-up doors (2) and fantastically sleek, powerful styling. "Not available in Canada" cars included the SAAB 99LE, a Subaru 1400 GSL Coupe, and a de Tomaso Pantera (1 love it!) A Chev Monte Carlo Grand National stocker spon- sored by Dow and built by Junior Johnson for Bobby Allison was there. Also George Follmer's Can-Am win- ning Porsche 917/10 painted in its new Royal Crown Cola colours which, as 1 reported some time ago, is now owned by Bobby Rinzler. Rinzler said that he thought the Can-Am series was becoming too expensive (and he's a millionaire) and that the costly turbo-chargers should be banned. "We would like to see a standard engine for- mula that would bring down the cost of aIl types of racing" said Rinzler, who paid $1 24,000 each for the two Porsches. Charlie Kemp, who will be driving with George Folîmier for Rinzler Racing, said that a lot of developruent would be done on the cars, and they would no doubt look quite different by the first race in June INCOME TAX RElU RNS prepared BOB CLANCY 178 Simcoe St. N. They also said that they wero not worried about Penske's newer Porsches, because Rinzler was keep- ing in close touch with the factory engineers and would bo getting all the latest modifications.
