With safety first and forernostinii their minds the Whitby Fire Department now hias six class A pumper trucks ini the fleet, each having the capacity to punp over 625 gallons of water a minùte on a fire. The department also hias two class B trucks and a 200 gallon water tanker in Brooklin as well as thie Emergency Van which carnies spare equipment such as 27 air bottles, cutting equipmeflî, portable generators and pumps, salvage pumips and dlean-up tools and materials. Despite the fact that the departnment lias one of the besi fireflighting records and some of the best equipinent the Whitby Fire Department stili stresses that the best mieans of combatting fire is to prevent it from happening in the first place.
