May 26tb is the Sat- urday date selected by the Whîtby YMCA and Youthpower to walk a delightful 15 mile route to raise funds f or the proposed Whitby commi- unity swim pool. Start and finish is at Henry Street High Sdi- ool new parking lot at the rear of the scliool. Here the YMCA Board of Directors will offici- ate at the final regis- tration, hand out check- point cards to those who have turned ini their sp- onsor sheets and theni will hiandle the details at the final checkpoint at the end of the walk. The walk route is very interesting and sce- nic passilg a number of Whitby area's famous ap- pie orchards which could be ini blossoni about that time. From Henry Street High School the walk wil go west 0on Harriet Street to Aunes, north on Annes and Cochrane to Taunton Road. Froni Rossland to Taunton Road is one of the quite scenic parts of the route. Checkpoint No. 1 (3 miles) wiIl be on the corner of Cochrane and Taunton. The walkers "I go west on Taun- Road to the next con- cession uorth at the Country Lane Golf Co- urse. The walkers must keep clear of the Golf Course staying on the soutb sie of the road facing oucoming traffie. Tien norti on the road leading to the He- ber Do wn Conservation Area where the Whitby Y operates their Day Camp. Cieckpoint No. 2 at 5 mile point. Aloug the fifth concession to Coronation Road then south past Taunton Road to the Rossland Road where the old hump br- idge crosses the main track of the CPR. Al walkers must stay off the track area and cross To wnl ine. Here the Kiwanis Club will man a checkpoint and Energy Centre. The Whitby Police Dept. wil be controlling the cross- ing at A important high- way points. Continue south crossing over 401 highway to the Iaseline Road - Turn left going East back to Whitby. Checkpo int No.* 5 is on the left band side appro- ximately 1/ mile East. Continue on past Lynde Creek and the marsh area to Henry Street. The Whitby Bay is to your right, then up Henry Street to Henry Street High School and return to the starting point to get your route card st- amped. The walk planned is one of the most attract- ive in the history of our local walks particularly the 4 Miles for Millions Walks that have been so successful. [t is meant to be a '"Stroll for a Pool Goal". Lots of places to enjoy the scen- ery that abounds about Whitby. A total of 15 miles, mostly paved and partly gravel. Whitby Service Clubs will be nianning the check- points. The St. John's Ambulance Brigade will be looking af ter any First Aid probleni, Echo will Stroil fora swim goa operate their car radio communications, Whitby Police Dept. wiîl super- vise ail traffic problems. A special bus servièe wil circulate hourly to pick up any walkers. Toilet facilities will also be bo- cated at each checkpoint. Sponsor sheets will be available at schools and at the Y office this week. Further details will be announced as the Waik Commit tee completes the planining necessary to make this a most suc- cessful and enijoyable walk. 90% of the receipts wilI go to the Swim Pool Campaign. 10% will go to the 4y' Youth Fund for special projects. Gymnasts Win fitness awards Two Whitby Y Gym- nastîc Club members re- ceived the higliest possi- ble awards in the Canada Fit ness Awards program conducted by the Whitby YMCA under the direc- tion of Roger Gomes of the YMCA program staff. Uisa Berry and Gin- ney Heffernan both re- ceived the Award of Ex- cellence certificate and crests in recognition of attaining the highest a- chievement level in the Canada Fitness Award 72/73. The certificates are signed by the Prime Minister and the Mini- ster of National Health and'Welfare. The group members trained for the tests and slîowed remarkable im- provement in the six ar- eas including speed sit- ups, standing broadjump, shiuttle run, flexed armn bang, 50 yard run and 300 yard run. T he programn was con- ducted each Saturday morning at Henry Street Higli School following the Junior Gymnastic Class. Roger Gomes an- Ugandian has bee n in- volved with training some of the OlYmpic contest- ants from his native land and bas been able to give excellent coaching. The results were 2 Excellence Awards, 7 Gold, 9 Silver and 6 Bronze from this initial group and the Awards were presented last Sat- urday morning at the regular gymnastic class by the Executive Direc- tor of the Y.
