COUNCIL NEWS At a recent Council meeting, John R. Frost of 501 Dundas St. W., Whitby, represented three property owners whose properties adjoin the west side 'of Henry St. to protest the clos- ing of the westerly 50 feet of Henry to vehi- cular traffic. Mr. Frost asked town council to review the present plans for recon- struction, of Henry St. He said that as a result of the proposed recon- struction, they would no longer have access to their properties except across proposed narrow driveways. He added that they had only be- come aware of the con- struction proposals when they were shown the working drawings of the road improvements the second week of May. Councillor Irwin mo- ved, and Reeve Edwards seconded, that a meeting be held between the par- ties concerned and the operations committee. A vote was taken and the matter was referred to the Operations Committee. Whitby Town Council last week passed by-laws authorizing the borrowing of $477,000 upon deben- tures for the construction of a Municipal Police Buil- ding at Rossland Road E., and the purchase of re- creational lands north of Victoria Street (Iroquois Park). The breakdown was $327,000 for the Police Building, and $150,000 for the purchase of the recreational lands. Visitors from Quebec Last Thursday, twen- ty Civic and Business re- presentatives from Lon- gueuil, Quebec visited Whitby. The Frenchdelegation was headed up by Lon- gueuil Mayor Marcel Robidas, and Councillor Jacques Bouchard. Reeve Tom Edwards welcomed the visitors in Mayor Newman's abse- nce. The Mayor was unfortunately in Ottawa at the time. Mayor Robidas spoke about the past Whitby delegation to Longueuil which "generated a good will tradition which is lasting". The Mayor ad- ded that he felt that Whitby deserved appl- ause for what they have done for the future of the country. Councillor Art Des- jardine thanked every- body for coming and expressed his enjoyment in meeting everyone pre- sent. He also said that he hoped everybody would enjoy their visit. Mayor Robidas made a presentation to Coun- cillor Desjardine of a pair of gold cufflinks and tie-bar bearing the Longueuil crest. Following the Wel- coming Ceremony the visitors were taken on a tour of Whitby, en- joyed a buffet luncheon and spent the afternoon touring General Motors and the Automotive Mu- seum in Oshawa.
