WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY. MAY 24. 1973. PAGE 5 MOTOR1NG with Mike Burgess îýj Local Oshawa Motor Sport Club members swept the field at last Sunday's Regional Championship Sla- lom in Guelph. This event held in the Royal City was the third event in the Ontarjo Region Solo-Events Champion- ship aind attracted no less than 88 competitors some coming froni as faraway as Kingston. About a dozen local drivers went down to compete, and compete they did! O.M.S.C. member Don Clemfent displayed his us- ual fine driving style in both a Vega GT (Jim Fami- me's) and a Datsun 510 (Team ERA) faking first in D & E prepared classes, and backing these wins up with a third in C/P driving G.M.I. student Bill Sower- by's 350 Nova. Another 0.M.S.C. member Hannu Halminen drove bis Datsun 2402, and Dale Fersenden's Datsun 2000 to firsts in A and B-stock classes. Jim Famme followed Don Clement in E/P taking second, with Jeff Christie, and Ruth Halliday coming in third and fourth. In D/P Team ERA drivers almost cleaned the class but were squeezed ont of second place by Pete Wri- ght who fought to the bitter end. As previously mentioned Don Clement took first, car owner Ralph Robinson took third, Ruth H1alliday was fourth, and Mfike Burgess who was suffering from a bad case of lack of sleep and bloodshot eyes knocked over a plyon putting me in fifth. Never-the-less, in my hu- mble opinion, 1 think that the four team ERA dri- vers are doing extremely well, considering this event was only our third event as a team, to take first third, fourth, and fifth. We've managed to sort out some of the Datsun's earlier handling problems and I feel that with a few more suspension modifications to the car, this team will be virtually unbeatable. Altogether, local mnotorsport entbusiasts walked a- way with fifteen of the top five positions in various classes. Also last Sunday was the second race in the 1973 Bulova Championship at Mosport Park. Thirty-three Formula Fords turned out and twenty- seven sedans to provide the spectators with what is becoming to be one of the most exciting displays of track racing ini our area. The F.F.'s were divided into two qualifying heats with sixteen in the first and seventeen in the second. Danny Burritt (88) started in the pole position in the first qualifyer with Luke DeSadeleer (52) a- longside followed by Baird, Messier, Larose, and Wil- son. DeSadeleer and Burritt battled continually for the lead, but when the checkered came down at the end of the fifteenth lap DeSadeleer was in the lead with Burritt three-tenths of a second behind. The second F.F. heat started with John Scratch in his Ferrek Mk. 3C in the pole with Clive Rayman (Titan Mk. 6B) alongside. And when the heat fin- ished it was stili the same Scratch and then Rayman. third, Decker moved up to third, Paul McManus mo- ved up to fourth and Victor Larose was fifth. Pickering resident Werner Gudzus (BM W-Autex 1600) and Peter Schwartzott (Datsun 510) were on the fr- ont row of the Sedan Race when the green flag started waving, followed by George Comacchio (FIAT 1245), Paul Lambke (Datsun 510), David Butler (Dat- sun 510) and Whitby resident James Muir (Viva GT). Gudzus seemed to have already solved the usual opening season problems as he managed to gain a considerable lead of almost six seconds over second place finisher Paul Lambke.* George Comacchio fol- lowed in third place with David Butler, and James Muir in fourth and fifth respectively. This victory moved Gudzus into a tie for the series lead with George Comaccinio.
