General Chairman. listing Chairman; Harold Eaton, Campaign Treasurer; Free Press Photo WHITBY SWIMMING POOL CAMPAIGN COMMENCES The Witby Swimming Pool Fund Raising campaign was kicked-off ast week at a dinner in the Alil Saints parisb hall. Approximately tbree bundred women wiil donate their time to start canvassing residerices, service clubs, businesses and industry , asking for piedges to raise $375,000. for an indoor community swimming pool. Hopes are for a pooî 25 metres long by 42 feet wide, 3 feet deep at the sballow end and approximately 9-10 feet deep in the deep end, with one metre diving boards, showers, change rooms, and other facilities., And if the $375.000. objective is reached, a shaliow children's pool could be included. At the dinner, arrangements chairman Paul Gaudet said "the facilities we bave now are inadequate." He also asked "do we have to depent on other people's facilities (Oshawa, Ajax, etc.) to satisfy our recreational need? " Mr Gaudet pointVd out that "We should contribute sometbing to our town" or else we're just parasites. "One dollar a week (per person) for two years will surpass our goal," he said. "Do your sbare in your community. Witb your participation we can honestly say the pool was built for the people by the people. " Concillor Dr. K.C. Hobbs, chairman of the Whitby Recreation and a patron of tb& pooî campa ign, said that "the people in tie municipality who want a service should be prepared to get together and work for that service"'. Dr. Hobbs said that Whitby residents should "4put your money where your moutb is". He went on to say "if we want the pool, ail of us shouid be prepared to share a little of our prosperity. Campaign Chairman Bibi Nurse pointed out tbat it's easier to give money on a weekly pledge over a two year period than to bave to reach in your pocket and give A at once.9 It was made clear by the memnbers of the Witby Recreation Complex Imc. (WRCI) that cash donations wil riot be enougb, and the only way to raise the necessary f unds will be by pledges. The Campaign organization executive consists of W.W. Whitby's Les McFarlane, famed author of the "Hardy Boys" books which soid some 28 million copies of the 22 book series, has moved to Sarasota, Florida. Mr. McFarlane and his attractive wife Beatrice (Bea), recently setiled into their new home at 2243 Pueblo tarie, Siesta Key. Mr. McFarlane said "there have been the usual frustrations that accompany any move, but now 1 am settled with îny desk, typrwriter and files". Mrs. McFarlane said that they went to Florida in January for the winter, because tbey had heard so much about Sarasota froni their good friends Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Nichol of Whitby. Mr. & Mrs. Nichol are the owners of the "Paims" apartmerits in Sarasota on the Gulf of Mexico, and it was in one of their apartments that tbe McFarlanes spent the winter season. Mr. & Mrs McFarlane went on to say that they decided to exchange the rugged Canadian winters for the suni and warmth of Florida, subsequently purchasing avilla Ét Woodside Village near Gulf Gate. She said that they are very happy. Mr. Les, McFadlane bas written over thirty books for young people under various psendonymns, along with numerous serials, novelettes and short stories which bave appeared ini popular magazines since 1926. He was a pro- ducer on the National Film Board froni 1943. 1957, and also acted as chief editor for CBS television Drama ini the late fifties. This ex-Whitby resident bas written and directed many filins including "The BOY Who Stop- ped Niagara","A Friend at the Door",and Royal Jou- riey". In tbe last seven years be bas written 70 T V plays and sperit one year working on episodes of "Bonanza" for bis good friend Lorne Greene. The busy author is presently writing a two-hour T V play for CBC based on the life of Alexander Grabam Bell. He is also writing a book about how be became involved in the writings of the Hardy Boys. Brian McFarlane, their son, is presently beard calling the -play-by-piay actioni for the T V prograni 6"tGame of the Week" on Sunday afternoons on Channel 44 (NBC). ï4
