PEEL PARK MAT HAVE TENNIS COURTS If council gives their approvai,, construction of three fenced double tennis courts may start this year. At a recent operations Committee meeting, approval was given to recomment to council that $20,000 from the capital budget be aliocated to building three tennis courts in Peel Park. It was reported that with the construction of the new senior citizent apartments on Green St., the practice area and one of the tennis courts would bee eliniinated and road widening space purchased by the town wouid pretty weii do away with the remaining tennis courts in the Rotary Park on Brock St. South. Recreation Director Gerry Geilette expressed the immediate need and demand for tennis facilities in the south centrai area. OFF TO THE FAIR by Hleather Bradley This year is Brookiin's 62nd annuai Spring Fair, which, like usual is to be held in the Community Park, Brooklin. This year's special- series of events shail take place Sat. June 2nd. Alil exhibits are to be pla- ced in the arena from 4:00 p.m. to 8:OOp.m. on Fni., June Ist. Commencing at 9:00 a.m. the arena shali be open to visitors, where the handmade articles, floral displays and various other arrangements are in view. nhe Oshawa Equestnian C- lub horse show takes place at 10:30 a.m. The midway, located dir- ectiy beside the arena wilI be in full swing throughout the day. The judging of heavy and iight horses in the haiter cla- sses is at 11:00 a.m. Starting at 12:30 p.m., the parade, in which neighbour- hood children participate, ma- rches from Gross Park to the Comm unity__Park. At 1:00 p.m. both the cattie judging and the rabbit judging occurs, along with the judging of heavy and iight horse hitch- es. The fair however does not have its officiai opening until 2:00 p.m, at whîch time the announcing of parade prize winners is heid. Also at 2:00 p.m. is the horse racing on the track behînd the bail diamond. The Oshawa Obedience A- ssociations dog show takes place at 2:30 p.m. Square dancing, Judo and Folk singing keeps the arena iveyduring the afternoon. MORE DISPUTES ON ARENA PRO JECT At an Operations Comm- ittee meeting recently, rep- resentatives of various trade unions appeared to request that local labour be used in the building of the new Whit- by Arena. Mr. William Fairservice, president of the Oshawa and district Building and Trades Council said that he had previously experienced diffic- ulties with another company owned by Mr. Vincent Piati, president of Newtown Const- ruction, the company awar- ded the arena tender. Mr. Fairservice said that he wasn't concerned whether the work- ers on the job are union, but that he did want to see local people empioyed. He also said that the men in the sub-trades were concerned about sub-contractors not being union. A local mron workers union representative said that mem- bers ini the Oshawa area are out of work and having to work elsewhere when he felt they should be working on local jobs. A bricklayers union rep- resentative said that he had experienced the same prop- lem last spring with 25 men out of work, while Newtown Construction brought ini men for an Oshawa job. On the other hand, a rep- resentative of the electrical workers said that there was a union contractor on the job in his field who would bc hiring local men. GIARBAGE DUMP PROPOSED AT LYNDE CREEK SOURCE At a council meeting, last Monday night, Couneillor G- erry Emm (North Ward) ex- pressed concern about the in- dustriai garbage disposai site being proposed for the area at the head of Lynde Creek in Reach Twp. He feit that the Town of Wbitby should take strong action if Reach were to approve this disposai site which he said ""could pollute the Lynde Creek ail the way to, Whitby Harbour." This matter is presentiy before Reach Council for ap- proval, and will be discussed Thursday night, June 7, at their council - planning board meeting in Port Perry.
