They ail have been polluting our roads for the past three or four decades with the blessing of both govern- ments=provincial and federai. I'm just about to forin PAT (People Against Trucks), an organization to stamp out ail trucks using our streets and super-bighways. Truck drivers (understandably so) can' abstain frorn joining PAT since their arguments won't be supported by the majority of people who wilI evcntually belong to this organization. PAT bas certain objectives in mrind: to get rid of trucks and vans which splaslh mud and water on ail small cars most of thein European imports; to get rid of drivers who change laites liberally witltout the sliglitest indication of their intentions; to get rid of ail tîtose self-appointed "Kiîîgs of the Road" who roar 60 muiles an hour (or even at higher rates of speed) in clearly marked 30 or 45 mph speed zones and finally to get rid of ail those gravel trucks which spiatter stones on car DuemiRdiaIMyTI% 10 -buaduSi.let, W hyI -w Mcmberî Provincial1 said thcy "ail the sli cause tbey ically 24 the Qucen Province. 1390 AJAX * LOCAL NEWS SPORTS ePlus th finest in COUNTRY PERSON TO PERSON CoMMNITY RADIO CHOO 1390 ROYAL VISIT rs of the Whitby Queen Elizabeth and Pr. But, wait a minute. This is itot ail. 1 have seenl some truck drivers blocking roads completely. Then, there are those who do their loading und unloading busiess right ini the middle of the street (ini Toronto at te CPR tracks) and, of course, tîtose who leave their trucks on roads and laneways and siwply walk away. Now, after having said titis, I hope something can be donc to curb ail traffic abuses wbich are created by these steel-and-iron inonsters roaming up and down ,on major thoroughfüres. First of ail, I suggest, that the Department of Transport uit truck flow, particularly in the dcnseiy populated areas. Secondly, more truck. routes are needed. Howevcr the best solution wouid be to "phase out" the trucking business completely. Railways should be used more often for transportation of goods froin city to city. And, with a steady increase of air cargo traffic, onle should pay more attention to possible "air lifts" or somnething like that. Many car drivers like myscif strongly believe that alternate means should be explored iin the nearest future to eliminate trucking business without sacrificing thieir own livelihood.
