PAGE 2, THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS Editoria i Comment The Vancouver man put on his roller skates and headed East for Montreal. Roller skating across Canada in 1967 was his way of wishing Canada a happy Centennial. That is one way of saying Canada has something to sing about. An odd way, but each to his own. Most of us are probably ardently Canadian in our thoughts but seldom have a chance to show our feelings. Canada Week, in my opinion, offers just such a chance to stand up and be counted. Canadians have never been *very strong on flag waving and there is much merit in this characteristic but it can be overdone. Canada Week has no approved format. Again it is a case of doing your own thing, as the kids keep telling us. It is an occasion to pause and reflect on our good fortune. It is an opportunity to join hands with other Canadians and show the world and ourselves- how much we care about Canada. It means that instead of taking Canada's unity for granted or leaving the problems to others, we show our concern. Patriotism is a positive thing, not a negative feeling. We should recognize that Canada has problems of unity and understanding which are unique to this country. Canada is not an easy country to unite or govern. We ar- e wide of girth, living in the shadow of a very articulate giant. We have cultural and regional curtains which tend to slow the east-west flow. Bilingualism is a rich asset but it does not make for easy unity. In other words, because of our peculiar problems, we must work hard at our unity. Harder than most countries. Going about our daily duties and being good citizens is essential to a healthy country but we need more than that. We need excitement and some outward signs to enthuse others about the promise of Canada. We need to be emotionally committed. Canada is home. We need to protect it's virtues and promote the potential. Throw the question to the World and listen to the response: 'Canada, how lucky can you be-enjoying the best of two worlds.' We have been labelled 'unknown country' but I prefer to call Canada boundless and bounteous. Canada bas North American newness and drive, British balance, French freshness and wears a coat of many colours. We have a confluence of culture rather than conflict -and conflagration. Let us be proud of Canada. Let's work to make it stand taîl among the .nations of the World. Let us be builders, not bystanders. Canada Week is a good starting place. Closing date is August 24th and the last day for registrat- ion for the first session is June 29th. The camp will be active from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday with a Saturday morning session thrown in as well. Arrangements for swimming and cross-country racing at Heber Down Park 3 times a week has been scheduled, with transportation provided. Qualified super- visors and lifeguards will be on duty. For kids living around Brooklin bus collection both ways is being worked out. A wonderful program ail - kids will be active in is training and testing for the Canada Fitness Award. They compete for Excellence, (old, Silver and Bronze Awards. By far gymnastics will head the main activity followed most likely by track and field. Soccer and field hockey are two new sports the kids will be active in, and the nice thing about the whole program is that boys and girls play together. With a growing concern for physical fitness this program is a great opportunity to strengthen and co-ordinate their bodies with good competition, learn new recreational skills and have a fun summer. Basketball, badminton, volleyball, bicycling, tennis, soft bail, street hockey, rhythmics, film shows and talks take up the rest of the program. The day to day lay out has been scheduled in such a way that the kids make use of the whole day. They bring their lunch with them. For example a Monday schedule will read-morning: gymnastics, tennis, street hockey and soccer. Afternoon: volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, tennis with swimming and cross country running at Heber Down Conservation Area. The other days will follow on a similar basis. Should the outdoor tennis courts at Henry Street Should the outdoor tennis courts at Henry Street High School parking lot be ready in time; it is hoped construction will start this week, then ladies tennis will be sclheduled two times a week in the mornings and mens tennis in the evening.
