PAGE 22,.THURSOAY, JULY 26, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS KALNINS UN EUROPE PARIS, FRANCE The train ride to Paris - the city of love and romance - can turn into an unforgettable experience. Particularly, if for some unknown reason, the timesehedule bas been changed. In my case it took some ingenuity to get back on the orignal Amsterdam - Brussel - Paris Nord Express.. 1 was fortunate enough, however to share a coupe' with an, elderly Dutch couple, an aristocratic German lady, a petite French woman and two American college students. And, pardon me, 1 almost forgot to mention the cigar- smoking Italian who looked very much like the famnous movie producer Carlo Ponti. At ffrst, for the hundred kilometers' or so, things were just great. But then, complications arose. The dense smoke from those Dutch cigars started to, fIi our tmny coupe'. lhe French lady in the cloud of smoke diplomatically intoned '1Perbaps, we can open the window, just a littie." lhe two Americans were rather indifferent to the suggestion, but, the Dutch couple tended to side 'with the French woman. As one being closest to, the window,- 1 started to, open it. Ibis brought some fiery react'ion fromn the German - speaking lady. Complaining of cold and headaches, she got up and pulled the window down. Àt this point, no one dared to challange her. Such a move could have caused a small riot. Mind you, there were ample opportunities to get fresb air while the train conductor kept the door open for ticket inspections. Finally, the train chugged into Paris Gare de Nord and we ail feit somewhat relieved. My next step was to, find the Metro. Fifteen minutes inter 1 was afready in my hotel room. he next day was set aside for sightseeing. I managed to see some .of my old favorite places: Place de la Concorde, Notre Dame, L'Opera and Champs - Elysees. However, 1 skipped the Eiffel Tower and Moulin Rouge. in search- for Paris fashions, 1 made a quick tip tp In search for Paris fashions, 1 made a quick trip to Pierre Cardin. And, 1 learned something about. Paiis fashion models. They are prima donnas during photo sessions. Further, they expect to be paid at once by photographers. The work tbey perform is not always that good. Often they rush and are careless about their personal appearance. 1I'tbink they are grossly over - rated by any fashion standards. The on - the - street fashions are easier to photograph. Just find a seat at the famous drug store on Rue Montignon - and you will see some of the best fashions around. French women, 1 discovered, are not as fashion - minded as they used to be. Thanks to the American influence. Finally, 1 must warn Canadians to stay away fromn clip joints and outdoor cafes on Champs - Elysees. The prices are often atrocious. Would you pay 75 cents for a bottle of 'Coke or 60 cents for a cup of coffee. One restaurant near the Opera House charged me four Canadian dollars for a mushroom ommelette and french fries. And, for Pete's sake, stay away from Taxi drivers. Tbhey will 'take everything and 1 mean EVERYTHING. It is quite common to see tourists haggling over prices at local bars and restaurants. There are times when the police have to step ini to settle monetary disputes. in my next column, 1 intend to take a closer look at the French people who are a part of this colourful city l'11 also expound my views on French women.
