WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, A UGUST 23, 1973, PAGE 5 FASTBALL NEWS The Whitby Canadian Tiremen have been idle for some three weeks now but did manage a pair of games during the past week. On Tuesday night they dropped a 9 - 0 game to the classy Cobourg Merchants at the Whitby Town Park. Then on Thursday night the Tiremen playing short handed came up with perhaps one of their finest games as they were edged 1 - 0 in 15 innings against Lucky One from Oshawa. The two losses, while not going to show up in the record books, will help to sharpen the Tiremen for their up coming O.A.S.A. playdowns which open in Cobourg on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. It will be against another Cobourg entry not the Merchants that the Tiremen played against this season. The second game of the series is back in Whitby on Tuesday night August 28th at 8:00 p.m. Cobourg with Jim Chase on the mound again proved to be too much for the Tiremen here last Tuesday night as he limited the Tiremen to a pair of hits, a single by Gould, the lead off batter in the first inning, and a single by John Vesters to lead off the 5th inning. Ken May on the Whitby mound allowed seven hits and claimed nine strikeouts. Chase for Cobourg had 12 strikeouts and his mates played errorless ball. Thursday night's game was a dandy in Oshawa with Dave Leaming and Ken May hooking up in what had to be one of the best pitched games in some time. The game went 15 innings before a walk, an infield out and a passed ball allowed the Lucky ones to score the only run of the game. Leaming claimed 29 strikeouts along the way while giving up 8 hits, his mates made 3 errors. Ken May had 17 strikeouts and he gave up 10 hits over the 15 inning affair with his mates booting five times. The real test for the Tiremen starts this Thursday night in Cobourg and back here next Tuesday night August 28th at the O.A.S.A. playdowns get underway. This is what the team played for all year, lets give them plenty of support. 0w ta kes you right to the EX.
