WHITBY FREE.PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1973, PAGE 3 1ette rsto the editor ELECT "GERRY EMM" "If the work load requires me full time I will be available full time" Election to be held Monday Oct. 1st. 11a.m. to 8p.m. The people do care Let EMM care for you Dear Editor: Eighteen months ago, the Government announced the siting of a new international airport at Pickering, Ontario. This was to be the second of two international airports around Toronto, and the th- ird international airport with- in a radius of 300 miles between Toronto and Mont- real. Snce that time, People or Planes has led a mounting opposition to this project; Our objections are based on the fact that there is not a proven need for another international airport either now or in the predictable future. The estimated cost (ranging from 600 million (Government figure) to 2 billion) represents a colossal expenditure by the Federal Government. This is being made at a time when there are higher priorities for such a sum of money. These priorities include public hous- ing, the correction of region- al disparities and the stim- ulation of decentralization from the Metro Toronto area. But the Federal Govern- ment has plunged headlong into the airport planning. They have hoped that op- position to the airport will die as arable farmland turns to weed with the departure of farmers who have been expropriated and bought out. The airport and associated complex will occupy some 43,000 acres of class 1 farm- land which produces a major portion of food supplies need- ed to maintain a stable cost of living in this area. The Government has been forced to announce, because The car pictured above is what's left of a '69 Chev, driven by Randy John Wetherup (19), of 495 Byron Court, Oshawa, after suffering an estimated $2,000 dam- age. The Wetherup vehicle was apparently southbound on Thickson Road W., last Sunday night when it was in collision with another vehicle at the 7th concession, occupied by John Edward MacKenzie (31), and June MacKenzie (26) of 111 Balckfriar Ave., Weston. Damage to the MacKenzie vehicle was estimated at $3,500. The MacKenzies were hospitalized with head injuries. The matter is still under investigation. This accident, although not looking very serious, caused an estimated $2,000 damage to -e vehicle in the photo, and removed approximately 50 feet of fencing on Brock Street South at the railway overpass, last Saturday after - noon. Charged with driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 mm of blood is James William Crafter, 39, of ScarbQrough. His passenger, Donald Pearson of Brock Street South, Whitby, was taken to the J. O. Ruddy Hospital with injuries. of the opposition to the land grab, a Hearing of hIquiry. The terms of reference of the hearing are weak, and it is doubtful that real informat- ion will be forthcoming unless citizens across Canada take up the cause. There is no need for a second international airport at Toronto. There is need for correction of regional dis- parities, provision of jobs in areas outside Toronto (there is a minimal unemployment at Pickering) and decentral- ization of major industries from Metro Toronto. If the Government pro= ceeds with this airport, rich Metro will get richer ... and the poor will get poorer. Yours very truly, C.M. Godfrey, Chairman PEOPLE OR PLANES
