bs*..s. ..ss. mu Mike Burgess To auto racing fans, the Labatt's -50 Grand Prix of Canada at Mosport, September 21, 22, 23, is much more than just another race. lt's a once - a - year happening, like the Grey Cup, the Kentucky Derby or the Stanley Cup playoffs. It is the only time this year that the Grand Pr- ix drivers in their Formula 1 cars make an appearance ini Canada. It's this country's only world championship event and one of two in North America. The Grand Prix drivers, men like Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Peter Revson and Denis Hulme, began to arrive in Toronto early this week. Their cars ... Tyrrelîs, McLarens, Lotuses, Ferraris, Brabhams, 10 makes in ail ... arrived Tuesday by special charter plane. Highly skilled crews will begin immediately to ready them for the opening day of practice and qualifying, Friday. Drivers and crews stay close to the track, at the Flying Dutchman Motor Hotei in Bowmanville or in Oshawa at the Holiday Inn or the Carousel Motel. Race fans in - the - know frequent these places, hoping for a glimpse of the stars or for a chance to get an autograph. Fans start to arrive at the track early in the week, at first just a trickle. By Friday, the rush is on to get a good camping spot, which means close to the track and close to the sources of free wood and water. Mosport becomes a tent city with the odd mobile home or trailer home spotting the 500 - acre property. On Friday, the action starts on the track with 500- i horsepower Grand Prix cars beginning the drama of qualifying on the 2,45 mile circuit. The battle for the ail - important starting position will continue through until late Saturday afternoon, interspersed with Bulova Championship qualifying and races when local drivers get the opportunity to strut their stuff before the Grand laps of the Labatt's 50 Grand Prix of Canada. They're here for more than $220,000 in prize money, special qualifying awards and transportation allowances. At the end of the 196 - mile race, there are also World Driving Championship points to be figured and the winner takes home a replica of the Labatt's trophy. The brewery wilI also sponsor the race next year and has an option on continuing it's backing through to 1977. The organization of the race is handled by the Canadian Racing Drivers Association. It is sanctioned by the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs and the world governing body of auto racing, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile. It is the l4th of 15 eVents, run in 15 différent countries, counting toward the World Driving Champion- ship and the Formula 1 Constructors title. Admission to the race is $8 at the gate, but Mosport offers a general admission ticket for $7 if purchased in advance. A package deal ticket, called the Supertieket, offers general admission for aIl three days, entry into the paddock area and a grandstand seat for $15. Normal price of the package is $23.
