A lot of you are saying, "Yes, the heat wave is gone and thank heavens for that!" Sorry but 1 happen to be one of those weird cats who hates to see thé end of summer. I'm flot saying 1 like the summer' when it's so bot the pavement starts melting and running in your ditch, but I do like a summer when it's warm enough to go swimming almost anywhere. I say anywhere because there are flot too many pools in my neighbourhood and those who do own pools around here have flot seen fit to share their good fortune wîth me. Fali is, to me, a depressing timne of the year, especially with ail the vegetation turning brown and dying off for the winter. If I bad my way we would just go from a hot sumnmer right into a cold winter with lots of snow for skiing. Tennis on a Tbursday and Sdiing on a Sturday. Mind you, the doctors would be busy witb a lot of the flu and severe colds, but what the beck, how else would they make enough money to go to Miami Beach every wînter? I suppose if they were really in desperate straits they could get a seat on the Council for a few extra bucks and I bear there will be one available soon, but that's another story. 1,11 tell you about that one in tb.ree weeks or so. Most home owners wiil agree that Fail is the time when everything you have been putting off catches up to you. This is the time of the year when you decide, after a spell of three days cold weather, that you will get busy and put up the storm windows. Happy surprise! As you drag out the fir st storm window and prepare to bang it wberever, you are amazed to discover one pane is missing and bas been replaced by about 30 slivers of sbarply pointed glass. Now it cornes out. Number one son slinks forward and says, in a low tone, "Gee dad, last summer I was playing. catch. with Fido and the bail sorta slipped and I guess I forgot to tell you about it huh?" Hrdware stores love storm window timne. They make almost as much money in storm window season as they did in screen door season when faitbful Fido spotted FOR FUN AND RELAXATION ah668-26514 the neighbour's cat and ignored the closed screen door in bis haste to rid the property of the furry intruder. SD what the heck, why should $3.50 come between a father and bis loviiig son who has a rotten pitching aiM. After a trip to the plaza, it's back to the task at hand which bas suddenly turned into a game called, Which Window Goes Where? The rules are easy. In the Spring you carefully mark the storms with a light pencil mark tbat's guaranteed to self - erase by Faîl and you're ready to play the game. Wifely nagging is not advised at this point and doing so, can lead to father making a one way trip to the local watering spot. Finally after playing a whicb block fits into wbich hole contest on a large scale the storms are in place and sealed up for the coming Winter. Unfortunately the storms are canary yellow and the house trim is royal purple but wbo even thinks about storm windows when he is busy painting the house in the middle of Summer. You can always pretend you're extra smnart this year and bave your Christmas decorations up before anyone else on the block. Faîl is also the time wben the heavens split open and down crashes 36 tons of leaves on your lawn. Funny, especially since you don't even own any trees. lIl1 bet you laugh ail the way to the dump. You can't burn tbem because you tried that last year in the front ditcb but some twit called tbe Fire Department and tbey promptly showed up and gave you a stern lecture in front of the neighbours. Worse still, 'your kids went around mumbiing, "My dad is a dummy!" OnIy in this season do you discover your garden shed is not big enough to hold ail those outdoor goodies you bought ail Summer whenever the stores bad a sale. Tbis is also the time of year when you forget to dlean ail the leaves and junk out of the eavtrougbs. But you'll remember, wben the first snow bits and your eaves freeze up solid and drop off. Cool Faîl nights and drives into the country to watch the leaves turn. Isn't it deligbtful? No way! l'Il take Summer any time. windows. Now!.
