PAGE 8, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1973, WHITBY FREE PRESS ICALNINS IN PARIS PARIS - 'Wanna' buy an old armchair or a bottle of French wine? Then, head, for Rue St. Antoine and Rivoli, near Bastille. Almost ahl big cities in the world have famous shopping areas. London has it's Oxford Street, New York attracts shoppers on Fifth Avenue or Times Square, Tokyo has tbe fashionable Ginza. But, Paris? Weil, it bas the St. Antoine Street Market. If you haven't heard of it, don't despair. After ail, not every North American tourist gets as far as St. Paul du Marais. To me, the avid food connoisseur, the St. Antoine Street Market was a pleasant discovery. By North American culinary standards, the French market could come closest to a Food Fair at Sherway Gardens, except that on St. Antoine the mile - long sidewalk is not for walking. You wiil soon discover that by French miles, you're allowed to occupy the entire sidewalk pavement with groceries, fish, poultry, meat, fruits, veg- tables, flowers, you name it. This means, a prospective customer must find space to move around. No doubt, he's likely to encounter hard times, trying to squeeze through the mountain of merchandise, piled high on both sides of the sidewalk. But, if everything would be so easy, you couldn't say you had been shopping on Rue St. Antoine. And, the latter is often as fickle as the French Mademoiselle. Siddenly, you see a beehive of activity, looking down fromn your hotel wmndow. So, you walk down the stairs, hoping to fetch some of the goodies. As soon as you get there - bang!- the merchants are packing up. They are off for a mid day siesta. 0f course, you try your luck a bit later. And, sure enough, by five o'clock in the afternoon the business is booming once again. St. Antoine is famous, mostly (so l'm told by local -French- men) for it's broucherie shops, but if you have enough francs left over, you can buy everything, starting from shirt buttons to some of the most beautiful flower bouquets. As the market swings into high gear, the crowd moves faster from shop to shop. Thus, the shopping fun turns into a shopping madness. Often, tempers flare. But, whatever you do, don't get yourself embroiled in fist fights or vocal outbursts. Tlhe broucherie man always wins. His French will always excel yours. Then, it's time to move on. A sheer fascination grips the crowd .-as a fast - talking salesman assaults your gentle ears with his colourful description of a bed blanket. And, he'll demonstrate the comfort of his product right on the spot. After a few successful demonstrations, the crowd will literally push the salesman off the curb.
