(1 to be eiected) Appeal Way will kick off its 1973 campaign $615.000. This year'starget represents a 6.9 percent increase over the 1972 objective of $57 5,900 and is designed ta meet the increased operating costs of the Appeals 27 member agencies. 1%If the response of the businesses, industries and people of Oshawa and Whitby is as excellent this year as it was in 1972," Mr. McLauglin, United Appeal President, said, "~wetre confident we wil»l reach our objective." The $61 5,000 figure was arrived at after careful review by UA's budget committee of the requirements originally submitted by the agencies. Every year the agencies submit a projected budget ta, the United Way budget committee. These budgets are caref ully reviewed and money t ompromises must be mode ta establish how the net proceeds may be distributed to each group. In most cases, there was some pruning of expenses. In two, however - the Big Brother Association and the John Howard Society - substantial increases were recommended to provide for professional counselling. To now, ail counselling done by the two organizations has been handled by volunteers. An incroasingly large share of United Way support is granted to recreation, an area in which -the local government is also assuming greater.responsibility. This year the United Appeal will concentrate on its payroll deduction campaign, in an effort to-involve more 'and more area f irms and employees in this most effective way of United. Way giving. "The United i4ppeal Way is not just another agency, but an- econornical, sensible and effective way of collecting the funds needed to enable the 27 agencies which make up the Appeal to serve people". qiWhen you give the United Way, you give to a fatherless boy, ta the dedicoted work of the Salvation Army, to the abnormal and normal child, to those struck by disaster, economically, socially, mentally and physically. qtIf governments were to take over what the United Appeal does, costs would increase many times. The hundreds of voluntary workers who give freely and willingly of their time would be replaced by paid civil servants. UNITED APPEAL CAMPAION HEADOUARTERS 52 SIMCGE ST.
