Chief Crouch told the Free Press that 'lire occurs at ANY time, in ANY place, and can cause grief and sorrow to ANY person". "Practice fire safety methods, and enjoy your life". HW says "Nine out of ten fires can be prevented, but each person must respect fire and the fire causes". The diief points out that failing to show respect may create the problems of hardship that fire brings; no home, no r job, no clothes, no food and a loss of life. The Whitby Fire Department says if you value your life to reniember these points: Don't panic; close the door of the room on fire; caîl the Fire Department' (668-9311); keep your famuly with you - stick together, and leave the building; don't waste tinie picking up valuables. Get out and stay out. The Whitby Fire Department urges ail residents to carry out their own program of Care, Clean-up, and Comm- on Sense Caution, ail the tume. Fire is so final - fire can Break Your Heart! Some interesting facts have been compiled as a result of fires in Ontario. The biggest cause of fires is careless smoking, followed by electrical appliances. The worst month for lires is December, followed by January. The worst.day is Siturday, and secondly Sunday. The worst time for fires is 2 - 3 a.m., followed by 12 - 1 a.m. The most frequent contributing factors to fire deaths are firstly sleeping, and secondly alcohol. Another interesting point is that a persan will become unconcious after only three minutes in a smoke ied room. Fire fighting tops the list of the most dangerous jobs, followed by mine workers. The Whitby Fire Department's statistical record over the last three years, despite the growth in population and 11 % increase in firealarms, shows a 62.48% reduction in lire losses.
